STAGSNET`S STATISTICAL PREVIEW
26th February 2003 23:01

As early as on August 31, 1935 the Stags played Oldham in a league game for the first time. Oldham, just relegated from the old 2nd division, lost to the only goal of the game then. But the first visit to Boundary Park on December 28, 1935, ended in a 4-1 defeat and in fact the Stags had to wait till the 14th trip to Oldham to register the first on only two wins in total at Oldham. On November 15, 1961, the Stags won a fourth division game 3-2. The two teams were promoted together the next season with Oldham finishing 2nd after having scored in all home games and the Stags finishing 4th scoring in all but three, Oldham netting 65 times including the record 11-0 win against now Conf side Southport, and the Stags banging 61 goals in. No wonder the games between the teams that season produced 11 goals! On October 20, 1962, Oldham won 3-2 and at that time both teams were on top of the fourth. When the Stags met Oldham on March 9, 1963, it was their first league game since December 22, 1962, due to the big freeze. I remember that! The Stags eventually won 4-2 to mount their promotion challenge. The biggest Stags win was a home 4-0 on August 31, 1968 and Oldham's biggest victory was the away game at Oldham on September 14, 2002, when the Stags were hammered 6-1. Only once in 47 league games between the two games has a tie produced no goals, and that was incredibly enough in the 1966-67 season when Oldham hit 51 home goals and the Stags 36 away ones, a figure only exceeded by QPR that season. And after the teams played 1-1 at Field Mill on September 2 the following season, Oldham did not draw again until March 9, 1968, when they played a goalless draw at Bournemouth – a total of 29 league games without a draw! The teams also met 25 years ago when the Stags played one season in the old 2nd division. The home game was lost 0-2 due to two goals from Steve Taylor (who played for the Stags two seasons later) in front of a 7.302 crowd and the away game weeks before the end of the 1977-78 was won 1-0 courtesy of a John Miller goal attended by 7224. And the previous 23 league games at the Mill have produced 80 goals.

Played for both sides: Martin Pemberton, Steve Taylor, Steve Whitehall.

Home stats: P 23, W 12, D 4, L 7, GF 45, GA 35.
Away stats: P 24, W 2, D 9, L 13, GF 23, GA 46.
