Boss wants to reward magnificent Stags' support with derby day win
mansfieldtown.net, Thursday 15 March 2018

Mansfield Town manager David Flitcroft wants to reward the ‘incredible’ 4,172 Stags’ fans who will travel to Meadow Lane for Saturday’s hotly-anticipated local derby with three points towards the club’s promotion push.

We have sold out our full allocation of 4,172 tickets for the fixture, which means there will be a sea of Mansfield fans in the Jimmy Sirrel Stand on Saturday for what is set to be the biggest clash between the sides in recent memory with just three points separating the third-placed Magpies and fifth-placed Stags.

And the boss has expressed his sheer amazement at the phenomenal following his side will receive at Meadow Lane and is determined to represent the supporters with a good performance - and three points.

“Wow. That’s quite incredible," the gaffer said, when told the numbers who are set to travel to Nottingham this weekend.

https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2018/march/flitcroft-15-march/

"The noise our home fans make is fantastic and having that many fans away from home, we’ve got to give the fans something to really get behind," the gaffer said.

“I can see it being full and we’ve got to go and make sure we represent. The home fans have energised me here, they really have, and we’ve not given them the points that I want to give them yet but it’s a case of going to Notts County and really trying to drive that forward.

“I think the supporters here have backed them all season and that’s been a factor of the good results that we’ve had.

“It can be quite an intimidating place, they’ve made it a fortress Notts County, and we’ve got to try and take hold of that and take ownership ourselves. It can only come through the performance of the players and the energy they show.

“Like in any big competition or any sporting event, that’s where you’ve got have your focus. Stick to the game-plan, the game-plan might change but you’ve got to be adaptable.

“That’s certainly what I’ll bring to any game but certainly in the big games, you have got more what I call background noise and more pressure to deal with. It’s how we take that pressure from the players and how they perform and commit.”

After being in his post as Mansfield Town manager for two weeks, the boss has admitted his pleasure at the intensity at which the squad have performed in training since his appointment.

“They’ve looked good and they’re very receptive. I think whatever manager takes over, you always get that [intensity] for two, three or four days and then there might be a drop off - there hasn’t been.

“There’s been an intensity to their learning, there’s been an intensity to what they do and that’s really important. I think whatever club you take over, you always get a surge of intensity in everything and you’ve got to look for that drop off period.

“That’s not come and they’re a fantastic group to work with. I’m understanding the dynamics of it every time I’m manager and understanding what makes them tick.

“It’s got some fantastic characters in it, there’s a willingness to learn, there’s a willingness to have an openness and a transparency, which is in everything I do.

“They want to be successful this season. They’ve come here and the club has promoted this promotion push and the club’s done a fantastic job of that.

“These players have committed and they’ve committed to Steve [Evans, former manager] over his tenure here and now they’re committing to what we’re doing. Players do adapt really well.”

Skipper Zander Diamond was forced off with a hamstring injury in last week’s draw with Colchester United whilst midfielder Jacob Mellis suffered a knock to his ankle, however the manager has revealed that both injuries are less serious than first feared.

“They’ve recovered really well. Both are not as bad as we thought, which is good.

“They’re working with the medical team - we’ve got a great medical team here - they’ve been working round the clock with Ross [Hollinworth, head physio], Lizzie [Read, sports therapist] and Beth [Wilcockson, sports scientist] on competing and trying to get ready for Saturday.

“They’re doing everything they can but the early stages were the critical bit. We got a load of work into them to negate the injury site and get that in good knick.”

Flitcroft thanks chairman as Stags enjoy training at England HQ
chad.co.uk, by JOHN LOMAS, Thursday 15 March 2018

New Mansfield Town boss David Flitcroft has thanked chairman John Radford for allowing the players a training session at England’s luxurious St George’s Park headquarters in Burton this week. With Stags’ training pitch out of action, it was the perfect way to help prepare the squad for Saturday’s six-pointer derby at Notts County and Flitcroft said: “The support from the chairman to get us the pitch at St George’s just shows his ambition and commitment to this club to allow me to do that.

“There’s not many other clubs I know would have allowed me to do that. I can only thank him. “We were also allowed to take our analyst team to video the work from the gantry. Everything is set up for excellence there.

“We took 22 players over and it was probably my favourite session since we’ve been here with the commitment from the players and what we could offer them.”

Flitcroft decided to allow John Dempster and Richard Cooper at the Academy to play a young side in the reserves on Tuesday so he could work with his entire first team squad in Burton.

“It was waterlogged here on Tuesday so we went over to St George’s,” said Flitcroft. “It was important we all stayed together.

“There was a reserve game, which Demps and Coops took and the lads ran out winners. They put up a fantastic performance and I was delighted.

“But it was important we got all the players together and put a session on to give them more detail of what I am after, which we did in a fantastic environment.

“Then we were able to dive over to watch the Coventry v Luton game, which I enjoyed. “The result was probably the right result for us in terms of being able to keep Luton in our sights and keep Coventry at bay. “With the Exeter result Tuesday was a decent night for us in terms of what was going on elsewhere.”

Injured Stags pair recovering well
chad.co.uk, by JOHN LOMAS, Thursday 15 March 2018

Injured Mansfield Town pair Zander Diamond and Jacob Mellis are both recovering well and have not been ruled out of Saturday’s big local derby at Notts County. Both ended up with injuries in last weekend’s 1-1 home draw with Colchester United with skipper Diamond tweaking a hamstring and Mellis suffering a nasty kick on the ankle.

However, manager David Flitcroft said today: “They have both recovered really well and were not as bad as we thought, which is good.

“We’ve got a great medical team here and they have been working round the clock with them to try to get them ready for Saturday. They’re doing everything they can. “The early stages were the critical bit on Sunday/Monday when we got a lot of work into negating the injuries.”

David Flitcroft getting familiar with Mansfield Town squad
chad.co.uk, by JOHN LOMAS, Thursday 15 March 2018

New Stags boss David Flitcroft believes he is starting to understand his squad and what makes them tick after two weeks in the hot seat. As he prepared his players for Saturday’s massive derby at Notts County, Flitcroft said: “The lads are looking good and being very receptive. “Whatever manager takes over you always get that initial receptiveness for two or three days and then there is a drop off. But there hasn’t been that here. “There has been an intensity to learn and what they do. That’s really important. “They are a fantastic group to work with. I am understanding the dynamics of it every day I am manager. “I am understanding what makes them tick and getting to know the players as well. It’s important to know what their cause is as individuals, who they do it for, and try to get that common cause which is obviously promotion.” Flitcroft said he had tweaked a few things since coming in to replace Steve Evans. “We have altered things, but the players have taken it on board which I have been most impressed with,” he said. “The squad has some fantastic characters in it and a willingness to learn.” Flitcroft said it was important he is open and honest with his views on players, especially those not selected. “We also have an openness and transparency in everything I do,” he said. “One thing I have definitely given them is an honesty in what I have talked about. The more I get to know them the more I can delve into that, the more I can look to improve them. “Everyone can improve. Everyone feels as though they have a fair and equal opportunity to get into the first team. The competition here is healthy. “I can guarantee going forward that if someone wants to know why they’re not in the team I can explain that to them thoroughly, and tell them what they need to do to get into the team. “I am very honest with players. That’s the only way. I was brought up that way as a person. “As a player, if I wasn’t in the team I wanted to know why. I expected the manager to tell me why. “If he made a football decision I could accept it. So I have always done that since I became a manager.”

Mansfield Town aiming to make town and fans proud at Notts County
chad.co.uk, by JOHN LOMAS

David Flitcroft will make sure his players represent the town and huge army of away fans well in Saturday’s Meadow Lane derby. The Mansfield Town boss loves local derbies and will make sure his players understand the emotions behind them while urging them to concentrate on the football. “The Rochdale v Bury was a real local one as was Bury v Bolton - really passionate ones,” said Flitcroft. “You have to make sure the team is prepared for that noise and passion that comes from the fans. “For us to take over 4,000 fans to Notts is just brilliant. I will be telling the players how important this is to the supporters and the town that we represent. “We must represent with an honesty and sincerity. “But on game day I have to make sure the players just concentrate on the task in hand - that’s the key for me. “Derbies are for the supporters. We must respect that and turn up with an energy and passion.” Flitcroft said it was always a busy week building to a derby. He explained: “If you are in sport you’ve got to deal with the press, you’ve got to deal with the social media, you’ve got to deal with the fans, and the verocity of that at times. But all that is background noise. “When you actually strip it down, we’ve got to go there and what happens on the pitch is the key factor. “Have they taken the instructions on board? Is there a clarity to what they are doing? That’s what we will focus on this week. “In games like this you have more pressure to deal with and it’s how we take that pressure from the players and how they perform and commit.” He added: “We are going up against a very committed manager in Kevin Nolan. We know what he’s about. “The commitment and professionalism he’s always shown has followed him into his management career. “We certainly don’t underestimate any team. They’re in good form, but so are we. So it’s just about who can handle the pressure, the conditions, and the heat of battle. We’re really looking forward to it.”

Mansfield Town boss David Flitcroft says football lacks leaders
chad.co.uk, by JOHN LOMAS

David Flitcroft lamented the current trend of ever fewer strong leader characters in football. Ahead of Saturday’s big promotion clash at Notts County, the Mansfield Town manager said players who lead are vital to derby games. But he said it seemed they were being phased out through the way players are being coached at academies. “I think over the past 10 years, what the academies have probably done is take us away from a leadership group,” he said. “Your John Terrys didn’t come through the academy system. Those type of players are slowly diminishing. “You try to look for them. They’re hard to find at times. I was certainly that when I was a player and I loved local derbies. “It’s about keeping your nerve, directing traffic, picking players up who might just be struggling, and leading from the front. “When you try to recruit a squad of players, you’d love 11 of them, but they’re just not out there because of social impact, how people socialise now, the way players are mentored and coached and developed in the academies. “You probably haven’t got that character coming through the academies and it’s a shame.” He added: “When you looked at the top teams - your Steve Bruces, your Pallisters, your Keanes, they were everywhere. “Your Niall Quinns of this world. They roll off your tongue. “I think as football tries to develop we will probably lose that. It’s a worry as they are the type of players that come out on top in any big game.”

Logan believes Stags' fans can be difference in local derby
mansfieldtown.net, Thursday 15 March 2018

Goalkeeper Conrad Logan believes the travelling faithful of 4,172 supporters can provide Stags with the match-winning edge in Saturday’s big local derby against Notts County at Meadow Lane.

Logan has started all-but-one of Stags’ Sky Bet League Two matches this season, helping his side to the second-best defensive record in the division.

And as he looks forward to the mouth-watering prospect of 4,172 Stags’ fans packing out the Jimmy Sirrel Stand at Meadow Lane on Saturday, Logan believes a vocal support could be the difference.

“It’s fantastic. Most people would like that for a home game in this league. 4,000 fans going away from home, it’s going to be fantastic,” the shotstopper said.

https://www.mansfieldtown.net/news/2018/march/logan-15-march/

“We’ll need their voices and they might be, if the game’s tight and things are a little bit edgy, it might just be that bit of support and bit of will that might get us over the line. I’m sure they’ll be vocal like they have been all season.

“Whenever there’s a full house, it’s something special. There’s a lot times we’ll play games and there’ll be Tuesday night games and a long distance away and you’ve got to generate your own atmosphere but once you cross that line on Saturday, both supporters will be 'at it' and there’ll be a buzz.

“We want to play in big games, [in front of] big crowds and local derbies are fantastic but as a player, you’ve just got to play the game and not the occasion when it goes out there.

“Let the supporters and everyone else enjoy the day and whatever else but there’s only three points like any other game, so we’ve just got to be calm and play the game, not the occasion.”

The 31-year-old, nicknamed ‘The Polar Bear’, believes Stags have the ability in their squad to provide a moment of magic to decide Saturday’s game, but admits their approach to the clash should not differ from other encounters in Sky Bet League Two.

“For us going into this one, we’ve just got to keep doing what we’ve been doing, it’s worked so far this season. We’re in a decent position and there’s going to be key moments in games.

“You hope with the squad of players we’ve got, whether it be that bit of magic to score a goal or a defensive block or whatever it is, that we can do that on Saturday.

“They’ve got youth and experience and they’ll be a tough team, we’re under no illusions. We beat them here earlier in the season but you take that with a pinch of salt.

“It’s a different game, different occasion, different stadium, everything’s different. There’s been a lot more games played since then and they’re a good team.”

Reflecting on the season as a whole, Logan admits he would have liked more clean sheets and less draws, however he believes those single points could be vital come the end of the season.

“I’ve been happy. I probably would’ve liked a couple more clean sheets. There’s been games where we’ve won games 3-1 when we probably should have won those games 3-0. Personally, you pride yourself on clean sheets but I think I’ve had a decent season.

“At times, maybe at the start of the season, it’s been a bit of ‘huff and puff’ and we didn’t really get what we needed.

“We’ve only lost six games all season, albeit with probably drawn too many but those points may be the difference at the end of the season. It could be a point from being in the play-offs or that point might just take you up automatically.”

We must play the game not the occasion says Stags keeper ahead of derby
chad.co.uk, by JOHN LOMAS, Thursday 15 March 2018

Mansfield Town keeper Conrad Logan said the players must play the game and not the occasion when they run out at Meadow Lane for Saturday’s big local derby against promotion rivals Notts County. But Logan said players do love the big game atmosphere and he is hoping the 4,200 army of Stags fans can help edge them to victory.

“It’s a local derby and everyone is looking forward to it,” he said. “We want to play in big games with big crowds and local derbies are fantastic. A full house is always something special.

“There are a lot of times when you play Tuesday night games a long distance away and you have to generate your own atmosphere.

“Once we cross that line on Saturday both sets of supporters will be at it and it will be a great buzz. That’s why we play football. “But as a player you’ve just got to play the game and not the occasion when you actually go out there. “Let the supporters and everyone else enjoy the day and the buzz. But it’s only three points like any other game. So you’ve just got to be calm.” Logan believes Mansfield have a great chance of success on Saturday, saying: “We have just got to keep doing what we’ve been doing as it’s worked so far this season. We are in a decent position. “There will be key moments in games and you have to hope we have in this squad that bit of magic to score a goal or make a defensive block. “Sometimes derbies can be over-hyped as a player. “Fans will have a crack and some banter with the other fans. But we will solely be concentrating on what we can do on the pitch.” Logan is hugely impressed by the number of fans travelling down to back the Stags. “ To have 4,000 fans going away from home is fantastic,” he said. “Most people would like that for a home game in this league. “We will need their voices and, if the game is tight and a little bit edgy, that little bit of support and will might just get us over the line. “I am sure they will be vocal like they have been all season.” On the game itself, he added: “With both teams being so close to each other this is a big game. “But it is only three points - that’s all it is. There are three points on offer next week and three points on offer the week after. All we can affect is the next game. “Notts have had a good season. They are well organised and they are grinding out victories. They seem to be working hard for the manager. “They will be tough - we’re under no illusions. They have a good mix of youth and experience. “We beat them here earlier in the season but you can take that with a pinch of salt. It’s a different game, a different stadium, a different occasion.”

Shock of Steve Evans departure now gone for Mansfield Town players
chad.co.uk, by JOHN LOMAS, Thursday 15 March 2018

Mansfield Town goalkeeper Conrad Logan said the shock of manager Steve Evans quitting the club has now passed and everyone is enjoying working under new boss David Flitcroft.

Evans quit just over two weeks ago with 12 games to go and, as Stags prepare for Saturday’s derby at Notts County, Logan admitted: “That night it felt strange.

“But football changes daily. When someone goes be it a manager or a player, there’s nothing you can do. You just get on with it. “It looked like John Dempster was going to get it for the Stevenage game but the club worked hard to get the gaffer in now and you just crack on with it. It’s new people and new ideas.” He added: “He hasn’t changed too much. He has brought a few things he wanted to bring into the team tactically. “But he’s been brilliant. I think he’s been fantastic since he came in. He’s been very positive and he’s been well received by the lads in the changing room. We’ve enjoyed his training. “He has identified a few things he feels can makes us better, so we’re all looking forward to putting that into place and hopefully getting promoted.” On the campaign overall, he said: “It’s been a good season - we’ve only lost six games though we’ve probably drawn too many. But those points might be the difference at the end of the season. “We’re in a good vein of form and near enough a fully fit squad. So we’re in a good place. “Everything is positive. We’ve had a good run over the last few months and there is a good buzz around the camp.”

'It’s just like any other rivalry, you live it and feel it' - Notts County manager Kevin Nolan on the Mansfield derby
Magpies boss hoping to secure an overdue win against Stags on Saturday

nottinghampost.com, By Leigh Curtis, 15 MAR 2018

No incendiary statements, no sly digs and certainly no juicy headlines.

Instead, diplomacy has reigned between Notts County and Mansfield Town, which has created the impression it is just another game.

Whether it be players or managers, both camps have abstained from firing the kind of verbal bullets which may serve as inspiration to the opposition.

But while they have done their very best to play down this latest meeting, to everybody else it is far from a normal fixture.

Indeed, it is hard to recall one bigger in recent years, given just three points separate Notts from their rivals at the top end of the League Two table.

While victory would not only strengthen the ambitions of both clubs, it would also be a significant catalyst for the remaining eight games of the campaign.

In that respect there will be plenty on the line at Meadow Lane come 1pm, but for the Notts manager Kevin Nolan, it is merely business as usual.

“It’s just the next game and it does not matter who we are playing,” he said.

Read more at https://www.nottinghampost.com/sport/football/football-news/its-just-like-any-rivalry-1345493

“We’ve still got to play some of the other teams in and around us in the coming weeks, which is going to be great.

“We are looking forward to it, we will enjoy it and we will give it 110 percent.

“As long as we do that, then we will be okay.

“Of course we want the fans to have bragging rights on Monday, but the most important thing is that it is the next game.

“All we have to do is prepare properly and make sure we are ready. If we stick to a game plan and do what we are supposed to do then we give ourselves a great chance of three points.

“Everybody can then enjoy everything else which comes after that, but all we want is to enjoy what we are doing from now until May 5.”

While Notts are two places above Mansfield in the table, they have experienced very little success in their meetings of recent years.

You have to go back to 1997 for the last time the Magpies secured a home league win over the Stags, when they triumphed 2-1 as they went on to secure the Division Three title.

There is some considerable irony in that Sam Allardyce was the manager who later in his career appointed Nolan as his captain at Bolton, Newcastle and West Ham.

Going 20 years without a derby win at home is a long time to wait and Nolan will undoubtedly be keen to ensure David Flitcroft’s first derby as Mansfield manager is not a successful one.

“It’s just like any other rivalry and you live it and feel it,” he said.

“Everybody knows about it around the city and they’ve got 4,000 fans coming, which says it all.

“Although, I don’t know why we have given them that many tickets, I must admit.

“But I am looking forward to it. I don’t think I have managed to beat them since I’ve been here.

“We lost there earlier in the season, and then we lost in the Checkatrade Trophy when we made plenty of changes.

“We didn’t get off to the best of starts in that game as we conceded so early on , but I just think we are going to be really well prepared.

“If the lads can be what they have been for the majority of the season, then I feel we can come away with a really good result on Saturday and we will all be celebrating.

“That’s what we want. We want to keep plugging away and keep the momentum building.”

Kevin Nolan questions why Notts County have given Mansfield Town so many tickets for League Two derby
By Joe Jones

Kevin Nolan has questioned why Notts County have given Mansfield Town so many tickets but is eager for his players to do what they've been doing for most of the season when the two sides clash on Saturday.

The Stags travel to Meadow Lane for the 1pm kickoff, which will see two sides in the thick of the promotion race duke it out for points and, given the huge rivalry between the two, bragging rights.

“It’s just like any other rivalry and you live it and feel it,” Nolan told the Nottingham Post.

“Everybody knows about it around the city and they’ve got 4,000 fans coming, which says it all. Although, I don’t know why we have given them that many tickets, I must admit.

“But I am looking forward to it. I don’t think I have managed to beat them since I’ve been here.

“They are going to have half of their fans here so it’s not going to be that intimidating for them is it?” - Notts County boss Kevin Nolan
Magpies boss is determined to maintain club's stunning home record against Mansfield Town

nottinghampost.com, By Leigh Curtis

Notts County boss Kevin Nolan believes Mansfield Town will not find Meadow Lane that fearsome due to their mass of travelling support.

Stags boss David Flitcroft said earlier in the week that Notts can be “quite an intimidating place” given the Magpies have lost just twice at home in the league all season.

But Nolan maintains that will not be the case on Saturday given the Stags are set to be backed by 4,000 fans for the derby.

https://www.nottinghampost.com/sport/football/football-news/they-going-half-fans-here-1347832

However, the Magpies boss is eager to preserve what is a terrific home record which has been key to their rise to the top three of the League Two table.

He said: “They are going to have half of their fans here so it’s not going to be that intimidating for them is it?

“When he (Flitcroft) came here with Swindon it was probably a bit different.

“But we have made it a fortress and we want to keep it and make people feel intimidated.

“I had it as a player at Bolton, Newcastle and at the Boleyn Ground with West Ham.

“Meadow Lane is our home and we don’t want anybody coming to us and enjoy playing here.”

Mansfield Town are under pressure to get promoted insists Notts County boss Kevin Nolan
Magpies boss says Stags are coping well with the demands

nottinghampost.com, By Leigh Curtis

Notts County boss Kevin Nolan admits Mansfield Town are under pressure to win promotion this season, but says the Stags are handling it very well.

The Stags have one of the biggest budgets in League Two which saw them strengthen considerably last summer under previous manager Steve Evans.

But they now have a new manager in David Flitcroft after Evans left for Peterborough and he has been tasked with finishing off the job of leading the club to League One.

https://www.nottinghampost.com/sport/football/mansfield-town-under-pressure-promoted-1348459

The Stags can strengthen their push with a win against third-placed Notts with a win at Meadow Lane that would take them level on points with their rivals.

Flitcroft has yet to win since becoming Mansfield manager and Nolan says his opposite number will looking for the first significant win of his tenure at Meadow Lane on Saturday.

“They were on a good run and with everything with they have spent they should be where they are or even higher,” he said.

“They have one of the best budgets in the league and they have that pressure on them that they must go up because that’s what was set out at the start of the season.

“They have handled it very well. David Flitcroft is a good lad and I’ve known him a number of years.

“It was only a couple of months ago when he got one over on us at Swindon.

“He will be trying to do the same and will try to implement new ideas.

“You will probably see a different Mansfield to the one we saw four or five weeks ago.

“He’s had a couple of draws, but he will be trying to impress the fans and the people above him.

“They will want to get some momentum going and they will pose a massive threat.”

Nolan says the quality of Mansfield’s squad has made it hard for him to predict who they will field come 1pm.

But he says the outcome of the hotly-anticipated clash will hinge on who handles the occasion better.

“They are a good team and they are always up for a battle,” he said.

“They’ve got some good players and experienced players at this level certainly.

“They’ve got a good squad so you can pick and choose who they might play.

“You’ve just got to make sure you are ready for a number of different threats they can pose with different players.

“I think on the day, and when it’s an intense derby, those who come out on top are those who handle the occasion better.”

Absolutely not. Need to balance the books I’m afraid. Plain and simple!
