Whilst continuing to play down talk of his chances of getting the vacant manager's job on a permanent basis, Geraint Williams was delighted to pick up three points on Friday night.
Williams admitted after the game that he is yet to have a formal interview over the Layer Road managerial position, but stressed that, for the time being, he is happy with how things are going.
He told the official website: “The job is nothing to do with me - I just work with the lads during the week and I'm thoroughly enjoying the position I'm in. Of course, I want the job but we have a game to concentrate on this coming Tuesday.
“We've tried to get some basic shape into the team and the lads have taken to it well. They are working very hard in training and the short, sharp routines we're doing seem to be paying dividends.”
Welshman Williams believes the main dividends that the team have experienced in the past couple of games is the increased fitness levels which have guided the team to three late goals in his three games in charge. And all three have provided massive boosts to confidence as the U's begin their assault on the final third of the season.
“We've got into a nice habit of getting late goals in the past few games and we managed to get another one tonight,” he added. “It was one of those games when you wondered when the goal might come. They could have got a goal just before we scored when it hit the post but we capitalised on that bit of luck that came our way.”
However, ever the perfectionist, Williams was left looking for more from his players despite a crucial three points which lifted the U's up to 16th in the table. He wanted the U's to show slightly less nerves.
He explained: “We're disappointed with how we started because we looked very nervy in the early stages. We have been playing some very good football in the last few games and didn't really show that tonight. However, all credit to the lads because they kept battling away and we came away with all three points.”
