Stroud based youngster Rhys Sarson has signed a two year scholarship deal with League Two club Mansfield Town.

The tall centre forward was at Forest Green Rovers from Under-eights to Under-12s before being released.

He joined Cirencester Town, developing under coach Arthur Jupp and enjoying a prolific spell at Under-13 and Under-14 levels.

Sarson then returned to Forest Green on trial and quickly rejoined the Nailsworth club.

He was top scorer in his division, attracting interest from Birmingham City and Swindon Town, who both offered him trials.

He opted to join Birmingham and impressed for the Blues’ Under-16s, but injuries hampered his chances of earning scholarship forms at St Andrew’s.

At the end of last season Gloucester-born Sarson had trials with Preston North End, Scunthorpe United, Mansfield and Cheltenham Town, making two reserve team appearances for the Robins.

All four clubs offered him terms, but he opted for Mansfield after scoring twice in his trial game with the Stags.

“I enjoyed it at Cheltenham and had some great opportunities, playing for the reserves against Newport, when I scored on my debut, and Exeter,” he said.

“I had a great time and all the lads were welcoming. It helped that I knew a lot of the team but everyone else was sound to me.

“Cheltenham said I had 'good feet for a big fella' and I had a big chance of making something of myself.

“The only negative they said was my fitness, which needed to get better and I have worked hard during pre-season to improve it massively.”

Sarson said he ended up picking Mansfield due to the facilities on offer.

“I'm really excited as it is a great opportunity for me with great facilities and a coaching team that are going to push me to my limit to get the best out of me,” he said.

“The fact that where I am staying is on campus means I can do what I want after training, like using the gym and doing extra training.”
