Hednesford Town overcame a young Mansfield Town side thanks to a solitary second half goal from Tristian Dunkley.

The Pitmen were ready to face the full force of the League Two side, only to find out earlier in the day that it would in fact be an Under 21 side heading to Keys Park for the game.

This didn’t put Liam McDonald’s side off though and they could well have been ahead at the break on another day.

As the manager rung the changes at halftime and during the second period the home side continued to press towards the visitors and eventually found a breakthrough with just 12 minutes to go.

Striker Tristian Dunkley was able to beat two players before finding the back of the net for his first goals in Hednesford colours.

The Pitmen have just one final friendly left this summer when Rushden & Diamonds visit Keys Park on Saturday 6th August.

A Mansfield Town side featuring U21 players and trialists went down 1-0 in the club’s final pre-season friendly at Hednesford Town tonight.

Former Birmingham City youngster Tristian Dunkley grabbed the game’s only goal 12 minutes from time.

Stags boss Adam Murray elected to play it safe with just five days to go to the big kick-off at Newport County and decided not to send any first team players to Keys Park.

Eventually a crowd of 234 watched the Pitmen win a game they dominated.

Young centre half Corbin Shires captained a side that included first team coach Karl Hawley, topping up his fitness, along with Louis Danquah, Cain Smith, Jason Law and Zayn Hakeem, who are all part of this season’s first team squad.

Stags decide to send U21s to face Hednesford tonight
chad.co.uk, Monday 01 August 2016, by John Lomas

Manager Adam Murray has elected to send an U21s side for tonight’s final pre-season friendly against Hednesford Town (7.45pm kick-off).

The game was originally scheduled as a first team fixture, but Murray said last week that, with only five days to go before the big kick-off at Newport County, he would not take any risks with this game and has now decided to play predominantly U21s players.

Murray was delighted to see left back Mal Benning come through Saturday’s friendly at Worksop after a summer knock and now, apart from Jack Thomas, who is still suffering with tendonitis, Murray believes his players all have the requisite amount of minutes under their belts to start the new season.

Tonight’s match is still open to the public and admission prices are as follows:

Adults: £7

Concessions: £5

U16s: Free (when accompanied by a paying adult)

The address for the ground is Hednesford Town Football Club, Keys Park, Keys Park Road, Hednesford, Staffordshire, WS12 2DZ.
