SHEARER SAVES TWO PENS AS STAGS BEAT MORECAMBE AGAIN

Martin Shaw and Jeff Barnes at the One Call Stadium, Field Mill

On a wild, windy and wet afternoon, Mansfield won an incredible game 2-1 against Morecambe, with goalkeeper Scott Shearer the hero, saving two penalties. Morecambe took the lead inside the first minute when a header away by Lee Collins hit Jamie Devitt and bounced into the path of Kevin Ellison who took full advantage and fired superbly into the bottom right cornerof the net. It was the 8th time in the last 10 home league games that Mansfield had conceded a goal in the opening 15 minutes, and Mansfield had not won any of those previous 7 games. But today was different with Mansfield scoring twice to be in front by 24 minutes. Firstly, Matty Blair scored when his goalbound shot took two deflections, firstly off Barkhuizen and then off central defender Dugdale to loop over keeper Barry Roche and into the net. A stroke of luck no doubt but Blair didn’t care as he scored his first goal for the club. He was also Mansfield’s 15th different scorer this season. And Mansfield were in front when Krystian Pearce lost his marker from a corner to thump a header home from Mal Benning’s corner. The second week in succession that a Benning corner from the right has created a goal. Morecambe’s first penalty came on 34 minutes when Tafazolli tugged at the shirt of Fleming. We called the shirt-pulling during commentary and it is also clear on the video. Tafazolli was booked. Shearer dived to his left to brilliantly save Miller’s penalty. The wind seemed to get even stronger in the second half with the Stags playing into it and the Stags had difficulty clearing their lines at times. Morecambe were awarded a second penalty on 84 minutes as Devitt’s cross from the left struck the arm of Jack Thomas. It was harsh but you do see them given as well as not given. Mullin this time stepped up having scored 11 days ago against Shearer from the spot, but this time Shearer saved with his legs as the home fans lifted the roof again. Shortly afterwards Adam Murray was sent from the dugout but his team held on for an important win, lifting the Stags to 5th place in the table. Murray paid credit after the game to analyst Sean O’Callaghan for his hard work researching Morecambe’s numerous previous penalties to help Shearer. But most credit has to go to Shearer himself for his heroics. Fellow historian Paul Taylor and I cannot recall a Stags keeper saving two penalties in a game before (apart from a shootout and apart from Alan Marriott in 2010 who twice saved a retaken penalty at Luton). Shearer has to be our man of the match, but word also for Jamie McGuire who was superb in front of the back four. Playing against a physical team like Morecambe brings out the best in McGuire as we also saw in the reverse fixture 11 days ago.

Mansfield made one change from the side that won at Crawley. Craig Westcarr came in to replace the suspended Matt Green. Lee Collins retained his place at right back with new loan signing Danny Alfei on the bench. Lambe replaced Rose on the bench. Heavy rain all morning meant the pitch was heavy in front of the West Stand but played superbly in the conditions. Great credit to Mez Merriman and his groundstaff, a wonderful effort to get the game on, when Notts County down the road had their game postponed.

MATCH REPORT: Mansfield Town 2, Morecambe 1
chad.co.uk report by John Lomas, Saturday 06 February 2016

Goalkeeper Scott Shearer was the toast of Mansfield tonight as he made two penalty saves to help the Stags to a 2-1 home success over Morecambe.

In the first half he denied Shaun Miller and near the end Paul Mullin after two controversial decisions by referee Mark Heywood, the second which saw boss Adam Murray sent from the bench after an angry clash with the official.

Good football was difficult on a pitch hampered by rain and strong, swirling winds, but both sides somehow managed to conjure up a good spectacle.

Stags had gone behind in the opening minute to a Kevin Ellison goal, but Matty Blair levelled via a deflection on 15 minutes and Krystian Pearce put them in front nine minutes later.

Shearer made his first penalty save a minute later before his second near the end as the home crowd screamed at the referee.

But Stags clung on for a rare home win and were cheered off the pitch.

Mansfield made just one change with Craig Westcarr in for the suspended Matt Green.

Green had to sit the game out after two yellow card offences at Crawley Town last weekend.

Stags were looking for a third successive win for only the second time this season and a 12-day double over the Shrimpers after winning 2-1 away there on 26th January.

New signing, Swansea full back Daniel Alfei had to be content with a place on the bench.

The referee had two morning inspections of the wet pitch before deciding it was playable.

However, Stags could not have made a worse start on the sodden surface.

Collins tried to get the ball away with a diving header just outside the home box, but it struck Pearce and fell nicely into the path of Ellison, who drilled a superb finish inside the right post.

It was the sixth time in seven games the Stags had conceded at home.

McGuire headed away two Morecambe corners before Stags forced their first on 11 minutes.

McGuire met it with a soft shot that was cleared, only for the clearance to hit Pearce and fly back at Roche.

But Mansfield were level on 15 minutes.

Blair tried his luck from 25 yards and the ball clipped the head of Edwards en route which took it up and over a helpless Roche.

Soon after Westcarr battled his way to the left by-line and crossed low, Roche just beating Baxendale to the ball.

On 22 minutes Pearce headed the ball away as far as Ellison on the edge of the box, who stabbed a shot on target only to see Shearer well placed.

Three minutes later the Stags were ahead.

Benning sent in their second corner from the right and Pearce powered home an unstoppable header from six yards.

A minute later Stags had a let-off as Devitt picked out Ellison at the far post, where he put the ball into the net only to see an offside flag already raised.

They had an even bigger let-off on 25 minutes as Shearer made a superb save from a Miller penalty.

The award looked harsh as Goodall fed Fleming in the box and he went down easily as he turned Tafazolli. But the referee was on the spot, gave the kick and booked the Stags defender.

Miller tried to place it to the right of Shearer, but he guessed right and turned the ball away to huge cheers.

A minute from the break Clements let fly from 30 yards to force a great save from Roche, diving to his left.

Stags made the early running and stoked up the pressure after the break.

But the first save was by Shearer as he clung onto an on-target Ellison free kick from 30 yards on 53 minutes.

On 58 minutes Benning stepped up to take a free kick from wide on the right and tried to catch Roche napping with a curler to his near post, the keeper down to push away.

A minute later Stags made the first change with Thomas on for Westcarr, leaving Beardsley on his own up front.

On 65 minutes a poor Dugdale clearance went straight to Baxendale, whose curling finish wasn’t far wide of the far post.

Then Devitt pulled a 20 yard shot wide from a Pearce clearance.

Morecambe made a double change on 72 minutes with Molyneux and Mullin joining the action.

Beardsley was too high with a shot on 72 minutes and then made way for Lambe.

At the other end a Devitt ball into the box went through everyone and Shearer was forced into a parry.

Sensationally, Morecambe won a second penalty of the afternoon on 84 minutes as Devitt hit the ball at Thomas right in front of him and again it looked harsh to give handball.

This time Mullin took it but Shearer was again the hero as he saved with his trailing leg.

The Stags bench was furious with the decision and after the referee went over, Murray was ordered to the dressing room.

Fleming was booked for a foul on 90 minutes.

Five minutes were added in which Ellison put a close range header over to jeers from the stands.

Shaun Miller and Paul Mullin saw efforts saved by Scott Shearer as the Stags completed the double over The Shrimps.

Kevin Ellison gave the Shrimps the lead after just 58 seconds but goals from Matty Blair, with the aid of a deflection, and Krystian Pearce saw Mansfield turn things around after 25 minutes.

Miller then missed 10 minutes before the interval with Shearer again saving from substitute Mullin on 84 minutes to complete a miserable day for Morecambe.

Having conceded after 56 seconds seven days earlier The Shrimps were in front inside a minute at the One Call Stadium. Lee Collins's header rebounded off Krystian Pearce and into the path of Ellison who made no mistake with a low shot from the edge of the area.

The hosts had their first real sight of goal 11 minutes in. Jamie McGuire couldnt make proper contact with Mal Bennings corner but his tame shot was cleared into Pearce, the ball rebounding goalwards before being hacked clear.

Mansfield were level though on the quarter hour with huge slice of luck. Blairs shot from distance was hit into the ground with Ryan Edwards head helping the ball loop over Barry Roche and in.

With the wind continuing to play havoc chances were coming at both ends, Shearer just about holding onto Ellisons right-footed shot midway through the half.

The Shrimps were behind on 25 minutes however. After Adam Dugdale had sliced a clearance for a corner Pearce rose unmarked to head home Bennings corner from close range to complete the turnaround.

Both sides were looking shaky defensively though with the game wide open.

The next big chance was Morecambes with Andy Fleming expertly turning Ryan Tafazolli only to be pulled back in the area. Miller stepped up 10 minutes before the interval but saw his effort saved by Shearer diving to his left.

The Shrimps had Roche to thank for keeping the arrears at one heading into the break, the big stopper diving to his left to keep out Chris Clements well-struck shot from distance.

The game was a tighter affair early in the second period, Shearer holding onto Ellisons low free-kick and Roche saving well from Benning at his near post.

Neither side really asserted their authority with the hosts increasingly content to sit on their lead. The Shrimps only had half chances though, Devitt dragging a shot wide from 25 yards.

The Irishman then saw a cross-cum-shot just about helped clear by Shearer after Chris Beardsley had drilled narrowly over for the hosts.

Morecambes second spot kick of the day came six minutes from time, Jack Thomas adjudged to have blocked a Devitt cross with his arm.

Mullin stepped up but his low effort down the middle was kept out by the legs of Shearer as Mansfield hung on for victory.
