Winger Nathan Thomas has left the Stags to join Hartlepool United, the club can confirm.

The 21-year-old handed in a transfer request to manager Adam Murray after expressing a desire to move closer to his native North-East.

Thomas linked up with the Stags in the summer of 2015 and has made 21 appearances for the club this season, 12 of which were as a substitute, scoring one goal in the 4-0 win over Crawley Town in September.

Manager Adam Murray said: “Nathan came to us last week with a transfer request.

“He’s only ‘a baby’ and has been around the country to try and settle and plant some roots for him and his family [during his early career].

“An opportunity presented itself for Nathan where he has more security - a move which takes him back home.

“I have let him go with a heavy heart. In spells, he has shown that he is a good player. The thing with Nathan was, we needed consistency from him on the football pitch. For 10-20 minutes here and there he was brilliant, but we needed to rely on him week-in-week-out, and in my eyes he wasn’t at that stage of his development.

“Nathan wants to play every week, which is understandable. Hartlepool came in for him and we’ve come to an arrangement which suits both parties.

"[This transfer] has been one of the toughest calls I’ve had to make as a manager because I was close to Nathan as a person." he added.

The club would like to place on record its thanks to Nathan for his efforts this season.

Winger Nathan Thomas has left Mansfield Town to join League Two rivals Hartlepool United.

Murray said: “Nathan came to us last week with a transfer request.

“This has been one of the toughest calls I’ve had to make as a manager because I was close to Nathan as a person.

“He’s only ‘a baby’ and has been around the country trying to settle and plant some roots for him and his family.

“An opportunity came up for Nathan where he has the chance of a longer contract - a bit more security - and it takes him back home.

“For him and his family it was one he couldn’t turn down, so his agent asked us, for personal reasons, would we allow him to go back home?

“I have let him go with a heavy heart as I think in spells, he has shown that he is a good player. The thing with Nathan was we needed consistency from him on the football pitch.

“For 10 minutes here and 20 minutes there he was brilliant, but we needed to be able to rely on him to start games week in week out, and in my eyes, he wasn’t at that stage of his development.?“Nathan wants to play every week as well, which is understandable. “Hartlepool came in for him and we’ve come to an arrangement which suits both parties.”

Murray added: “Nathan’s representative asked me at the time if we were able to commit to Nathan’s future past this season. If I am being totally honest and protecting the football club, in my eyes, Nathan hasn’t quite done enough to warrant that yet.

“Everyone is fighting to be part of this journey and it’s a tough fight.

“The big thing with him for me is that he has gone from Newcastle to Sunderland, then down to Plymouth and up to Motherwell - he has been chasing some settled ground.

“I couldn’t turn down his chance of going home where he can get back with his family and play his football, hopefully play on a regular basis.

“I couldn’t stop that opportunity if there was a chance in four or five months I’d been telling him he hasn’t got a job, that wouldn’t be fair.

“Nathan reminds me a lot of myself probably 10 years ago.

“He is a fiery character and he needs some foundations in his life, and for me to keep him here with the risk he could be in the rat race at the end of the season, I couldn’t do that to him as a person.”

Thomas tweeted: “I am delighted to announce that I have signed for Hartlepool and I am looking forward to a new challenge and getting the club back up the league

“I would also like to thank Adam Murray and Mansfield Town for the chance to play for them and wish the clubs, players and fans the best of luck for the future and their promotion challenge.”

Pools Clinch Signing Of Mansfield Winger
Tue 12 Jan 2016 , hartlepoolunited.co.uk

Ronnie Moore has made his first breakthrough in the transfer market with the arrival of winger Nathan Thomas from Mansfield Town.

The 21-year-old started out as a youngster with Newcastle United before joining Sunderland, from where he enjoyed a short loan spell with Darlington.

In 2013 he turned down the offer a new deal and he went on to join Plymouth Argyle, where he made 24 appearances and scored his first competitive goal in their 2-0 win over Pools in September 2014.

The Ingleby Barwick born wide man’s next move was north of the border when he agreed a deal to join Motherwell last February but returned to England during the summer to join Mansfield.

Thomas has made 21 appearances for The Stags this term, including a Man of the Match display against Pools in the 3-1 win over Ronnie Moore’s men in November.

The winger, who has been handed the number 7 shirt at The Vic, has signed a permanent deal with the Club and will go straight in to contention for Saturday’s game against Wycombe Wanderers.

Thomas Can Sparkle At The Vic - Moore
Tue 12 Jan 2016 , hartlepoolunited.co.uk

The 21-year-old left-midfielder was the star of the show when Pools made the trip to Mansfield in November when makeshift right-back Scott Harrison was given a torrid time by the pacy Thomas.

Ironically, Harrison and Thomas are good friends having played together at Sunderland and Moore reckons the centre-back will be happy with news of his arrival at The Vic.

“I’m sure Scott will be able to tell you all about him!” Moore quipped.

“I know Scott is more than happy he’s on our team now - maybe he will get his chance to kick him in training because he couldn’t get near him at Mansfield that day!

“I’m pleased to get Nathan because we’ve needed a bit of quality in the wide areas; it was disappointing that we lost Kal Naismith but now Nathan is here and he has quality.

“He’s a genuine left-footed player who will bring a bit of sparkle to the team and he’s one of those who can excite the supporters when he picks the ball up and runs.

“He’s direct and he goes at people, and I think we’ve needed someone like that to get everybody going and light the blue touch paper, especially at home where I can see him causing a lot of problems for teams who come here.”

However, Moore revealed that his new signing may have to bide his time in terms of earning a start in the First Team following Saturday’s encouraging performance in the FA Cup against Derby County.

The Pools boss accepts that it would be harsh on any of those who started against The Rams to be taken out of the team but will consider his options ahead of Saturday’s game against Wycombe Wanderers.

“The way they played on Saturday it will be very difficult for me to say ‘out you come and in you go’ to any of them,”

Maybe Nathan will just have to be patient. He’s here and he’s going to add to the squad and make us better but if I had played in that game on Saturday and then got left out I’d be knocking on the manager’s door.

“Those are the decisions you have to make as a manager but I think I will leave that one right until the last minute.”

Pools remain on the lookout for further new players to strengthen the squad and Moore revealed that he is mulling over his next move after having a few setbacks in his search for a new striker.

“We’re still looking for someone to get on the end of Nathan’s deliveries now - a prolific goalscorer but where do you find one of them?” he commented.

“We’ve been everywhere and asked everywhere; we’ve put two bids in for different types of players which at the present time have been rejected so it’s about regrouping now and deciding what our next move is.”
