Mansfield Town say they are "not surprised" that manager Adam Murray has been linked to the vacant Walsall job.
The League One Saddlers are looking to replace Dean Smith, who left the club on Monday to take charge at Brentford.
Murray, 34, in his first full season in charge of the Stags, signed a contract extension in October.
"The club is not surprised by the rumoured interest. It reflects the huge strides which have been made under his management," a club statement said.
"Adam is under contract with the club and we are confident that he will continue to build on the work which he has started for many more years to come."
Murray moved into management in November 2014, initially taking over from Paul Cox on an interim basis.
The former Derby County midfielder kept the Stags in League Two last term and after 20 games this season, Mansfield sit seventh in the table.

The Saddlers, currently sitting fourth, are looking to replace Dean Smith, who left the club on Monday to take charge at Brentford.

Murray, 34, in his first full season in charge of the Stags, signed a contract extension in October.

A club statement today said: “The club is not surprised by the rumoured interest. It reflects the huge strides which have been made under his management.

“Adam is under contract with the club and we are confident that he will continue to build on the work which he has started for many more years to come.”

It has been just over a year since Murray took over as boss from Paul Cox, initially on a caretaker basis. Having kept a poor side up last season, a summer makeover has seen him build a side that currently sits in the League Two play-off zone.

Current coach John Ward is 5/2 favourite with the bookmakers to get the job on a full-time basis with recently axed Swindon boss Mark Cooper and Sean O’Driscoll both heavily linked.

Billy Davies and Brian McDermott have not ruled themselves out of the vacancy, while ex-Newcastle boss John Carver is a 25/1 shot.

BetVictor have Murray at 20/1 to be offered the job.

Mansfield Town player-manager Adam Murray is in the frame for the vacant manager's job at League One Walsall, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Walsall are beginning their search for a new manager after seeing Dean Smith leave the club for Championship side Brentford earlier this week.

Smith left Walsall after five years at the Bescot Stadium and the club are looking to bring in a young new manager to help continue their work done by Smith.

Murray has emerged as a contender for the role after impressing at Mansfield since taking charge in December 2014.

The 34-year-old is the youngest manager in the Football League and after steering the club to survival in League Two last season he is guiding the club to an unlikely promotion bid this term.

Mansfield are currently in seventh spot in League Two and Murray was rewarded with a new two-year deal in October for the impressive job he is doing at Field Mill.

Walsall are hoping to speak to Murray about the vacancy at the Bescot Stadium, but Mansfield are expected to try and keep hold of their player-manager.

Town are currently seventh in the fourth-tier, while Walsall are fourth in League One.

Walsall want to discuss managerial vacancy with Mansfield Town manager

Sky Bet League One outfit Walsall are keen to discuss their managerial vacancy with Mansfield Town manager Adam Murray, according to Shoot.

The Saddlers are currently fourth in League One but boss Dean Smith departed yesterday afternoon to link up with Sky Bet Championship outfit Brentford, departing the West Midlands-based club after five years.

Ex-Derby County midfielder Murray recently celebrated a year in his role as Mansfield Town manager having replaced Paul Cox back in November 2014, initially on a temporary basis.

Having been handed the reigns permanently, Murray was successful in keeping the Stags in the Football League last season, and has overseen a drastic upturn in fortunes during the current campaign with the Yellows currently in the play-off places in Sky Bet League Two.

Should Murray get the gig in the West Midlands, it would represent a remarkable story for the 34-year-old who has only been in management for a year.

The brand of football Mansfield play is attractive to say the least and Walsall could do a lot worse than hand Murray the chance to lead the club into the Championship.
