STAGSNET STATISTICAL PREVIEW
5th November 2015 20:51

Two seasons ago, the Stags and Oldham faced each other in the FA Cup, the fixture then going into a replay ay Mansfield, and the prospect of meeting Liverpool at Anfield. Then, the eternal League One side progressed into the 3rd round and lost only 2-0 at Anfield.

But in the season before that, the Stags got even better against the Reds at the same stage. In front of millions of TV viewers all over the world, the Stags lost only 2-1 at home to Liverpool, who then were drawn away to Oldham and were kayoed in the fourth round.

The FA Cup meetings between the Stags and the Latics two years ago were the first ones in fifteen years between the sides.

But already in the 1947-48 season, the Stags and the Latics clashed in the FA Cup for the very first time. A goal from Cooling on December 13, 1947 in front of over 21000 at Boundary Park was enough for the Stags to set up a home tie against Stoke, then like now playing at the highest level.

In the 1960's, Oldham dumped the Stags out of the FA Cup twice in three seasons. Oldham player at that time: Billy Dearden, later to boss the Stags and was manager when the sides clashed in the League Cup eight years ago. John Thompson, later to play for the Stags, starred for Oldham then and played in that game which ended in a 4-1 defeat for the Stags.

But since 1997-98, the Latics have been ever-present in the third tier of the Football League and played the Stags in the 2002-03 season. The Stags trip to Boundary Park on September 14, 2002, was one to be quickly forgotten. A 6-1 rout after one of the Stags' worst performances that season. The home game at Field Mill on March 1, 2003, was one of poor refereeing. Just read through the Stagsnet report of that fixture to understand why. Three red cards, referee rating 0 and a late converted Oldham penalty were things that very well summed up the Stags' most recent season above the basement division.

In the FL, the Stags and Oldham have been playing together during 24 seasons, starting in 1935 with a 1-0 Stags home win on August 31, 1935. The sides were promoted together from the basement division way back in 1962-63, Oldham in 2nd position and the Stags in 4th, and also clashed in the Stags' so far solitary season at second level in 1977-78 with the sides winning their away games then. Oldham are now in their 19th consecutive season at League One level, a record for consecutive campaigns at that level and have so far drawn ten out of their sixteen games and also changed manager earlier this season. But are unbeaten away (!) with seven draws out f eight. The Latics also were unbeaten away by the time of the most recent FL clash between the sides.

The most recent Mansfield v Oldham FA cup fixtures before the ones two seasons ago were played in 1997-98. On November 15, 1997, ex-Latic Steve Whitehall in his only Stags season equalized in the second half at Boundary Park to earn a first round replay, which was lost 0-1. Starred for Oldham in both games then did ex-Stag Scott McNiven, who in the Stags’ BSP (now National League) championship season managed Hyde in their BSP fixtures against the Stags along with Rhys Day.

Who will progress to the second round this time? Come on Mansfield !
