Following his release by the Foxes, Clucas had a short spell playing for Nettleham in the Central Midlands Football League at the end of the 2008/09 season before joining Lincoln City ahead of the 2000910 campaign after impressing whilst on trial.

However, he was released by the Imps at the end of that season, which led to him being handed a two-year scholarship at the Glenn Hoddle Academy, giving him the chance to hone his skills under the watchful eye of the former England legend.

During his time at Hoddle’s Academy, he was able to play for Spanish side Jerez in Group 14 of the Tercera division, which is made up of 361 teams who play in 18 regional groups corresponding to the Autonomous communities of Spain, during the 2010/11 season.

He returned to English football in November 2011 when joining Hereford United, where he made 62 appearances and netted nine goals, before moving to Mansfield Town for a fee of £20,000 in the summer of 2013.

During his time at Field Mill, he scored an impressive 13 goals in 49 appearances, form which earned him a move to Chesterfield for undisclosed fee in September 2014.

In his one and only season with the Spireites, Clucas continued to impress, scoring 12 goals in 49 games in all competitions to help the club reach the League One Play-Offs.

Named as the Proact Stadium outfit’s 2014/15 Player of the Year, he was often used on the left side of the attacking three midfielders in the Spireites’ 4-2-3-1 formation, although sometimes filled in on the left side of defence as well as up front.

Dean Saunders says Sam Clucas transfer to Hull City will help Chesterfield FC to strengthen
derbyshiretimes.co.uk, by Stephen Thirkill, Sunday 26 July 2015

Dean Saunders says the £1.3m transfer of Sam Clucas will allow him to add quality players to his Chesterfield squad.

Clucas, who joined Spireites at the start of the 2014/15 season from rivals Mansfield Town, will have a medical at Hull City on Monday ahead of an expected move to the promotion-chasing Championship side.

Mansfield Town will get a cut of the fee as part of a sell-on clause included in the previous £100,000 transfer.

And, although disappointed, Saunders said the deal represented good business for Chesterfield.

“For a club like ours we cannot turn this down, we have to remember where we are.

“I am very disappointed to have lost him, but he is going to a big club who were in the Premier League last year.

“We have got a big transfer fee for a League One player, there are not many League One clubs who get a transfer fee like that.

“He is probably one of our better players and, as the manager, I am disappointed to have lost him, but good luck to him.

“We can’t stand in the way of anybody. I expected this sort of thing could happen but having paid £100,000 a year ago, it’s very good business for a League One club.

“I will have some money to reinvest into the squad. I’ve been shopping in Lidl up to now, but now I’m going to be shopping at Marks & Spencer.

“No doubt we will sign two or three good players, who can make a difference to us. They are going to have to be decent players to get into our tem.

“I was prepared for something like this and I have still got my guard up. The players did well last season and there are still vultures out there.

“I can now sign a different type of player. I can assure the supporters that the players we bring in will be good

Clucas scored nine goals during 38 appearances for the League One side last season and played a key role in Chesterfield’s march to the play-offs.

It is the latest high-profile departure from the Proact Stadium after Gary Roberts was sold for an undisclosed fee to Portsmouth.

Windfall for Mansfield Town as Sam Clucas makes £1.3m move to Hull City
chad.co.uk, by John Lomas, Tuesday 28 July 2015

Mansfield Town received an unexpected six-figure windfall last night as former Stags winger Sam Clucas joined Championship side Hull City for £1.3 million.

Stags built in a sell-on clause when Clucas moved to local League One rivals Chesterfield last September for £100,000 and, although the club are not revealing how much it is, it is believed the Stags could get as much as £260,000 if the clause was 20 per cent.

Lincoln-born Clucas, 25, was signed by Paul Cox from Hereford United for £20,000 in June 2013, a fee decided by a tribunal, and has continued to flourish ever since with many Stags fans disappointed to see him join Chesterfield.

“I spoke to Sam last night and he is first and foremost a great lad, so it’s nice to see good people doing well,” said Stags boss Adam Murray.

“Ability-wise everyone saw what he was about at our level ,so he’s gone on to League One and shown it again and I have got no doubts at some point he will end up in the Premiership, he’s that good.

“So I am over the moon for Sam. I said to him last night the kit matches your hair - he is a nice bloke.

“It is an added bonus to the football club. You don’t plan for these things. But I am not saying we are going to use that money to sign two or three players. It’s something I imagine the board and the chairman will have a chat about where that money goes. It’s not something that’s been mentioned.”

Murray added: “I would love to have him in my team. He is a super player and somebody that, in the team I am putting together, would have fitted right it.

“At the same time some of the young players we have brought into our squad this season, there is no reason they can’t hit the heights that Sam has already.

“We have a lot of ability in our team - a lot of pace and power and, a big ingredient at this level, we have a lot of intelligence.”

Spireites boss Dean Saunders stressed the deal represented good business for Chesterfield.

“For a club like ours we cannot turn this down, we have to remember where we are,” he said.

“No doubt we will sign two or three good players, who can make a difference to us.”

Tigers win race to sign Clucas

The Tigers, relegated from the Barclays Premier League last season, have agreed a £1million deal for the sought-after 24-year-old.

Clucas has been the subject of offers from Chesterfield's Sky Bet League One rivals Scunthorpe and Wigan this summer but neither club came anywhere near the Spireites' valuation of the player.

Hull played a pre-season friendly game at the Proact Stadium on Tuesday night, which is when the move for the former Hereford and Mansfield man was initially proposed.

Clucas will discuss personal terms and undergo a medical on Humberside in the coming days.

The fee is a club record for Chesterfield, eclipsing the £750,000 they received from Southampton for Kevin Davies in 1997. However, they will have to pass on 15-20% of it to Mansfield after their local rivals inserted a sell-on clause in the deal that took Clucas to north Derbyshire in September 2014.

Clucas, who came through the youth ranks at Leicester, is primarily a left winger but was used as a left-back and a striker by former Spireites boss Paul Cook last season.

He scored 12 goals during the 2014/15 campaign to help Chesterfield reach the play-offs.

re Clucas deal:
150-200K to @mansfieldtownfc
70% back into club / service debt
30% playing budget
So IRO 250K to spend on players #spireites

Those figures are based on how Dave Allen has said the club divides up the transfer fees it receives #spireites
