The 29-year old has spent the last four years with Mansfield Town, including helping them to the Conference title in the 2012-13 season. He made 38 appearances for the Stags in League Two last season and picked up a number of supporters’ clubs Player of the Season awards.

He began his career with Crewe Alexandra and has also had a spell with Port Vale. His contract will come into effect on July 1st.

Manager Gary Brabin said, “I’m really pleased to bring Ritchie to the Club. He’s a no-nonsense type of defender who takes pride in keeping clean sheets. He’s an honest lad, who defends first and foremost and I believe he’ll be an excellent addition to the squad.”

The manager says that Sutton has all the qualities that he wants from a central defender.

He said, "I'm delighted. He's a no-nonsense defender, strong, mobile and a good competitor so I think he's the right type of character that we want.

"He takes personal pride in clean sheets and that's something that we want. We want to stop conceding goals, I think that's important, and I know from a personal point of view that it's something he takes pride in.

"He wants to get the defence organised to make sure we're strong and not conceding goals. He's a winner and I want someone who will solely think about defending and that's Ritchie.

"He's got all the right experiences, having won promotion from this league previously, and I think the key thing is that he is the right type of character as well."

Sutton's arrival at Prenton Park is the third signing of the summer after James Norwood and the re-signing of Steve Jennings. And the manager is pleased with the business he's done so far.

He added, "It's going well so far, we're speaking to a lot of players and I'm just glad that we've got Ritchie over the line."

The 29 year-old defender has agreed a two-year deal with the Club and has experience of winning promotion out of the Conference from his time at Mansfield Town.

He said, "I'm over the moon, I've been itching to get here all week and get it sorted. Once I knew of the interest, I was dying to come and speak to the Club.

"Obviously, the plan is to get back into the Football League next year, and that's something I've got experience in, so I wanted to come in and do that.

"The size of the club was a big draw. I spoke to a few people about the new gaffer and they all said good things about him so I think it will be good for me as a player.

"In my first year I was at Mansfield, we got to the play-offs and in the second year we got promoted, so that's one of the key things for myself and the gaffer, to use that experience to help us get back into the Football League where we belong."
