Our second-string picked up their first three points of the season with a superb 2-1 success away at Rotherham United in the Final Third Development League (East Division).

Alex Fisher bagged both the goals on a day which was packed with positives for watching Stags boss Adam Murray and his coaching team of Richard Cooper and Micky Moore.

The game also saw the return of Liam Hearn, who came on for the final quarter-of-an-hour, got stuck in and was unlucky not to get his name on the score-sheet.

Seven teenagers were also named in the Stags’ team and there was a real togetherness as Mansfield came from behind to record an impressive win.

After an entertaining opening half-hour, Connor Newton opened the scoring for the Millers in the 38th minute - latching onto a cute through ball by Jerry Yates, before slotting past Sascha Studer.

However, the hosts were ahead for less than two minutes as the Stags got back on level terms when Liam Marsden's fine ball forwards found Anthony Dwyer, whose lobbed effort over Tony Thompson was thumped into the net by Fisher at close-range.

Both teams had chances to score in an entertaining second half.

The Millers had chances through Newton, Yates and full-back Richard Brindley, whilst the Stags’ best opening came when Fisher latched onto a downfield ball by Studer and hit the foot of the post.

With seven minutes left to play, the Stags scored again to collect maximum points. Conor Green’s sublime, inch-perfect cross into the area from the right found the head of Fisher, who guided the ball past Thompson.

The former Oxford United striker almost completed the scoring in the last couple of minutes when he slid in at the far-post, but agonisingly couldn’t make a connection to Hearn’s teasing ball through the six-yard box.

Team: Studer, Green, Fitzpatrick, Brownlie, Danquah, Marsden, Rose, Spencer, Dwyer, Blake (Hearn), Fisher.

75 - Substitution for Stags. The hitman returns. Hearn ON, Blake OFF.
77 - CHANCE! Hearn almost makes an immediate impact as he latches onto a long-throw, turns inside the box and curls a shot just wide. 1-1.
88 - CHANCE! Hearn plays the ball to the back-post. Fisher goes sliding in and just can't quite connect as he looks for a hat-trick.

Hitman Hearn ready to return for reserves

Striker to play a small part in today’s game against Rotherham.

Striker Liam Hearn is expected to feature at some point for our second-string in today’s Final Third Development League (East Division) game away to Rotherham United.

The 29-year-old frontman, who was formerly with Grimsby Town, has been sidelined since suffering a knee injury back in August.

Manager Adam Murray revealed the news at a press conference this morning.

“The good news is that Liam Hearn will play a small part in the game,” said our boss.

Murray continued: “He’s made tremendous progress. He’s back a couple of months quicker than expected which is brilliant for him and the football club.

“He went to St George’s Park last week for his final tests and assessments. Obviously the staff down there are top drawer and they were ‘over the moon’ with him. They couldn’t believe his progress or how strong he is.

“They’re happy for him to push on and now it’s about building his game-time up and getting him back into functional matchday movements.”

Today’s reserve game against the Millers gets underway at 2.00pm. A relatively young side is expected to make the trip to South Yorkshire.

Liam Hearn PLAYS in Mansfield Town’s 2-1 reserve win at Rotherham United

Liam Hearn took a big step on his Mansfield Town comeback trail this afternoon after playing for the first time since August.

Hit-man Hearn played the last 15 minutes of the Stags 2-1 win at Rotherham United.

Hearn has not kicked a ball in anger since he suffered a cartilage injury in the Capital One Cup defeat at Sheffield United back in August.

Stags boss Adam Murray said: “Liam has made massive progress and is a couple of months ahead of schedule.

“It is great for Liam and great news for the club. He is strong and is now in a position to push on and build up his game time.

“Liam is gagging to play, but it does not change my mindset.

"I will not put any time scale on him being back in the first team squad or put any pressure on him, this is his career at stake.” It had been feared that Hearn would be ruled out for the entire season following the latest injury setback to dog his recent career.

Mansfield fell behind, before Alex Fisher hit a brace to seal the win.
