We are pleased to announce the signing of lightning-quick winger Jeffrey Monakana on a one-month loan deal from Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 21-year-old goes straight into the squad for tomorrow’s Sky Bet League Two away match at Oxford United.

A quick and direct player, Monakana boasts previous experience from spells with Preston North End, Crawley Town (loan) and Colchester United (loan).

The winger also spent time on loan at Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen earlier this season, where he made 10 appearances - including two against Celtic - and helped Derek McInnes’ Dons climb to the top of the table.

Born in Enfield, North London, Monakana spent four years in the academy ranks at Arsenal, before he joined Graham Westley’s Preston in June 2012.

Following some impressive pre-season performances, he made his senior debut for the Lilywhites in a Capital One Cup tie against Huddersfield Town in August 2012, and held down a regular place in his first season as a professional at Deepdale - featuring on 47 occasions and weighing in with six goals.

He spent time on loan at both Colchester and Crawley last season, punctuated by signing permanently for Brighton & Hove Albion mid-season.

Although he is yet to feature for the Seagulls at first team level, Monakana enjoyed a six-month loan at Aberdeen earlier this season.

Monakana’s loan with us will expire at midnight on Saturday 21 March.

Jeffrey Monakana's first interview as a Mansfield Town player will be on Stags Player later tonight. To subscribe, click here.

The 21-year-old has put pen-to-paper on a one-month loan with us from Sky Bet Championship outfit Brighton & Hove Albion.

Describing his style of play, Monakana said: “I think I’m direct, have a lot of pace, skill and I like to get assists and goals - that’s what I want to do and want to bring to the team.

“Hopefully, I can do all of that and get fans off their seats.”

He continued: “There’s been a long interest in me since I came back from Aberdeen and I’ve chosen to come here because I feel like this is the place where I can get games and really put my emphasis on the team and try to win games.

Although the 21-year-old is currently contracted to the Seagulls, he has spent time on loan at a club based 600 miles away at the other end of the United Kingdom this term - at Scottish Premiership title-chasers Aberdeen.

Monakana made 10 appearances for Derek McInnes’ Dons side and helped them to enjoy a couple of stints at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

Describing his season so far, the winger said: “It’s been a bit stop-start really. In the summer I got a little injury, then went up to Aberdeen.

“It was a great experience being top of the table and the fans treated me really well, but I felt I never got the game-time that I went up there for.

“So I had to come back and see what happened at Brighton. Obviously I’ve got the chance to come here, so I’m hoping to kick-start [my season] again, start playing more games and make a really positive impact.”

When asked how his move to One Call Stadium came about, he said: “Micky Moore (first team coach) sorted it out. I heard about [the opportunity to come here] two days ago and from there, it’s just happened quickly.

Despite his tender years, Monakana, an ex-Arsenal trainee, also boasts good experience at Sky Bet League One level.

He featured on 40 occasions during a year-and-a-half long stay at Preston North End, and has also appeared on loan for Colchester United and Crawley Town.

Monakana could make his debut in tomorrow’s Sky Bet League Two away game at Oxford United.

Academy manager John Morling said, “Jeff came to us with football league experience already having made over 20 starts for Preston, so for his development it is important he continues to be in a competitive first-team football environment.”

Monakana is yet to make a first-team appearance for the Seagulls but did spend the first half of this season on loan at Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen, making 10 substitute appearances.

Mansfield currently sit in 18th place in League Two, five points clear of the relegation zone.
