New signing Leon Best came through 45 minutes of match action this afternoon, featuring in the opening half of the Rams’ Under-21s defeat to Mansfield Town.

Best agreed terms on a season-long loan from fellow Sky Bet Championship side Blackburn Rovers on Monday morning, and was handed a starting role in this afternoon’s behind closed doors friendly with the Stags.

The forward began proceedings as the central striker in the Rams’ three pronged attack, supported by Mason Bennett and Ivan Calero - and it was the Spanish midfielder who got Derby off to the best possible start, as his swerving 20-yard short nestled into the top corner inside the opening 10 minutes.

The former Atletico B player soon doubled both his and the Rams’ advantage for the afternoon, as 10 minutes later, the midfielder prodded home from close range after Bennett saw his low strike initially kept out by the Mansfield shot-stopper.

Three minutes later Derby raced into a three-goal advantage. Right-back Kieron Freeman strode forward and tried his luck from 25-yards; the full-back's effort took a wicked deflection off a Stags defender, leaving the goalkeeping wrong-footed, as the ball flew into the net.

Best almost opened his account for the club in the 27th minute, after cutting in from the left and bursting towards goal, but the former Newcastle United forward’s subsequent strike whistled wide of the near post.

However, despite such a dominant opening 45 minutes from the Rams, Mansfield responded in emphatic fashion in the second-half, overhauling the three goal deficit with four well taken strikes, storming to a 4-3 victory.

Derby County Under-21s: Roos (GK) (Etheridge); Freeman, T. Naylor, Hanson, Lowe (Hendrie); Trialist, Bunjaku, Guy; Calero (McDonald), Bennett (Santos), Best (Thomas).
