STAGS V BRENTFORD - STATISTICAL PREVIEW
28th December 2002 0:01

Brentford are among the teams that played the Mighty Stags in their inaugural league season way back in 1931-32 and despite the Bees then finishing 5th and the Stags 20th in the old div 3 (S) the Stags were unbeaten in league fixtures that season. The first encounter between the sides was a 1-1 draw at Griffin Park on January 13, 1932, and on April 9, the same season, the Bees were stung 2-0 at Field Mill. After that season, the teams did not meet again (they have only faced each other in league games, writer's note), until the 1958-59 season when both clubs were founder members of the old third division, Brentford in 2nd position in the old div 3 (S) and the Stags in 6th position in the old northern section with a then club record of 100 league goals scored. This record was to be beaten five years later when the clubs found themselves in the old 4th division in 1962-63 and now I must admit that one of my earliest memories of following a full league season and the Stags was a 3-1 win at Griffin Park on August 25, 1962!!!! This victory was the third of six straight wins at the start of that season and the 3-1 meant that the Stags went top of the fourth division! Later, at Field Mill, Brentford took revenge by winning 2-1 just before Christmas and after that game the Stags did not play a single league game before March 9, 1963, then beating Oldham at home 4-2! That season, the Bees and the Stags were promoted together, Brentford as champs and the Stags in 4th position with a club record 108 league nettings. The above mentioned 3-1-victory was the first of a total three Stags win at Brentford and an interesting fact is that the Stags have scored three goals in each of them. The second win, a 3-0 on May 7, 1966, was very important in that sealed Brentford's relegation that season and helped the Stags stay up (two days later, the Stags was on the way to send Southend down by winning 2-0 at home). The third and the up to this day last away win at Brentford was a 3-2 on November 9, 1974, in the Stags div 4 championship season. The teams last faced each other at Griffin Park on the opening day of the 1998-99 season with the home team winning 3-0 but the Stags took revenge at Field Mill by winning 3-1 on January 9, 1999.

Played for both sides: Keith Cassells (came to the Stags from the Bees), Noel Parkinson (was on loan at Brentford before joining the Stags in 1980-81), Jason Pearcey, Pat Kruse (played for Stags on loan in the 70s)

Home games: P 17, W 8, D 5, L 4, GF 25, GA 17
Away games: P 17, W 3, D 4, L 10, GF 16, GA 30
