York City have signed defender John McCombe, 24 hours after he left League Two rivals Mansfield by mutual consent.
The 28-year-old, who joined the Stags from Port Vale last June, has agreed a contract until the summer of 2016.
"He's an experienced player at League Two level and captained Port Vale to promotion from the division last year," said York manager Nigel Worthington.
"We've worked hard over the last month or so to try and bring John in and we're absolutely thrilled he's signed."

Big Yorkshireman Joins York City
York City are pleased to announce that experienced centre back John McCombe has joined the football club as another January addition to Nigel Worthington's squad of players.

John, who is from South Elmsall in West Yorkshire, is 28 years old and began his football career progressing through the Academy at Huddersfield Town.

In 2007 he joined Hereford United and helped the Bulls win promotion from League 2 to League 1 making 27 league appearances.

John joined Port Vale in 2008 and spent five years at the Staffordshire club, captaining the side to a third place finish and automatic promotion last season playing 37 times for the League 1 bound Valiants.

This season John had a spell at Mansfield Town before leaving by mutual consent after only six appearances. Known as a goal threat from set pieces, he scored a brace for the Stags in a 3-2 home defeat to Accrington Stanley in League 2 on 21st December 2013.

John joins York City on a two-and-a-half year deal.

York City Manager, Nigel Worthington said: "The Chairman and myself have worked hard over the last month or so to try and bring John into the football club. We had to wait until the start of January to see where things were at Mansfield and we're absolutely thrilled to have John come and join us. He's an experienced player at League 2 level, has played a wealth of games and has captained Port Vale during their promotion season. To have that within a group I've got great faith in already is very very valuable. Hopefully he can come here and do really well, not only for himself but for the football club as well."

New signing John McCombe said: "I'm really excited. Obviously I'm glad to get it all done after working hard on it for the past week or so. I'm glad to be here and will be glad to be back playing football again. I'm someone who gives one hundred percent which hopefully the fans will appreciate. I'm just a good defender and hopefully a good leader too."

We would like to welcome John to York City and look forward to seeing him in action for The Minstermen.
