Another new striker for Stags as they prepare for Tranmere cup tie?

Mansfield Town hope to have a new striker in the squad in time for tomorrow night’s Capital One Cup first round tie at League One Tranmere Rovers.

Stags, beaten 2-0 but far from disgraced in Saturday’s opening League Two clash at Scunthorpe on Saturday gave a second half debut to striker Ollie Palmer (pictured), who signed just in time to be involved.

But today Stags expect another new face in their forward department.

“We hope to hear something this morning,” said manager Paul Cox. “Until we do we won’t be shouting something from the rooftops. We want to make sure the paperwork goes through all right.”

New boy Palmer impressed with an eager second half debut and Cox said he could be in line for a start tomorrow along with the odd ‘tweak’ to the side.

But Cox confirmed the club would be taking the competition very seriously and there was no question of a lot of changes or a weaker side heading for Prenton Park.

“The League is our bread and butter,” he said. “But this is a football match and we want to win every match. I want to tweak the jigsaw and get a settled side.

“I have just looked back at Saturday’s video and we weren’t that far off. We had chances. But we must learn quickly that, if you don’t punish teams then they will hurt you.”

Stags should have a full squad to choose from, apart from Keiran Murtagh, who is nursing a tweaked knee ligament.

Tranmere will certainly be up for the game tomorrow as their day off yesterday was cancelled by angry boss Ronnie Moore after a poor display in their opening 3-1 defeat at Walsall on Saturday.
