Radford only arrived at the One Call Stadium at half time, after travelling back from Ireland, and informed Cox at the break that he was giving him his car.

Stags were 5-1 up at that point and went on to win 8-1 thanks to a Matt Green hat-trick, two from Lee Stevenson and goals from Colin Daniel, Adam Murray and Anthony Howell.

After the game, Cox joked he still wasn't sure if the car 'gift' was a wind-up as he concentrated on talking about footballing matters and a team performance that hit top gear.

He said: "As for the car, I'm not sure if it is wind-up. Maybe I'll get into the car park and it will be a bicycle with some stabilisers on it."

Far from it. The car was there, gleaming in the car park, complete with personalised registration MT51 COX

A football club chairman has given his Aston Martin car to the team's manager as a reward for an 8-1 victory.

Mansfield Town chairman John Radford handed over the keys to Paul Cox following the win over Barrow on Saturday.

The Blue Square Premier team won 7-0 when they played Barrow last March and Radford said he wanted to do even better when the two teams met again.

"It's worth a bob or two," Mr Radford said.

'Top guy'

"It's my old Aston Martin so it's not brand new. It's a couple of years old," he added.

"You have these things and you've got to give people targets and things like that, so he fancied the car and I thought I'm about ready for a change and he did the job."

The car, worth up to £80,000, was waiting in the car park of the Nottinghamshire club after the game, already fitted with personalised MT51 COX registration plates.

Cox told BBC Radio 5 live it was "a bit surreal to be honest".

He said: "I didn't really take him at face value when we was talking but to be fair to the man he's a top guy and when he did it, it was unbelievable.

"I love cars. I think every man does, don't they, but it's the football that motivates me."

Mansfield Town: I hope car gesture will persuade Cox to stay, says Radford
Monday, February 11, 2013, Nottingham Post, by Stevie Roden

MANSFIELD Town chairman John Radford hopes giving his Aston Martin to manager Paul Cox means one thing – he won't be leaving anytime soon.

Radford had already told Cox he would be giving him a new car as a present.

But even the Stags boss was shocked when he was told at half-time of the game against Barrow that it was the chairman's own supercar that was waiting for him in the car park – also with new personalised number plate, MT51 COX.

Mansfield were already 5-1 up at that point and romped to an 8-1 victory in the end, with Matt Green grabbing a hat-trick and Lee Stevenson a brace at the One Call Stadium on Saturday.

It was a seventh Blue Square Bet Premier win in their last nine games and the Stags are sixth, three points off the play-offs with up to three games in hand on some rivals ahead of travelling to promotion rivals Newport tomorrow night.

And their Welsh opponents sit fifth, meaning victory for Mansfield tomorrow will lift them into the play-offs due to their superior goal difference.

With Cox again looking like leading his side into the play-offs, and in with a shout of the title, a smiling chairman Radford said: "I promised Paul a new car and, at 5-1 up, I delivered it. It was my Aston Martin so I think it stops him going to any other club! He is not going to go anywhere else now.

"He needed a better car than he was driving so I gave him mine. I think he liked it.

"I am delighted with the way it is coming together and what the boys are doing. It is about keeping that continuity there.

"We are now starting to eke out the results and are moving up the league and that is what we have to continue doing."

Stags boss Cox still stunned over Aston Martin gesture from chairman John Radford
chad.co.uk Monday 11 February 2013

STAGS boss Paul Cox today drove into the One Call Stadium car park in the Aston Martin handed to him by chairman John Radford on Saturday still as shocked as when he was given the keys during Saturday's 8-1 thrashing of Barrow.

http://www.chad.co.uk/sport/football/mansfield-town-fc/stags-boss-cox-still-stunned-over-aston-martin-gesture-from-chairman-john-radford-1-5400116

It seemed the chairman had mentioned a new car for his manager during a relaxed chat last Wednesday.

But in no way was Cox prepared for the chairman to hand over the keys to his own Aston Martin, costing £125,000 new, at half-time after Cox's side had already achieved the scoreline Radford had wanted.

The car was parked behind the stand bearing a new registration plate of MT51 COX and Radford phoned club press officer Mark Stevenson once the score reached 4-1 to say he would give Cox the keys at half-time if they could match the 5-1 of the registration plate.

Seconds later Adam Murray lashed in the fifth and the car was Cox's.

“It is still all a bit surreal,” said Cox today. “We were having a laugh and a joke last Wednesday and he said something about the car which I thought was tongue in cheek after a couple of beers.

“The first I knew about it was at half-time when I had come out of the dressing room. He threw me the keys and said your car is in the car park.

“I was dumbstruck. I kept thinking it was a prank and Jeremy Beadle was going to pop out. This is just testament to the guy. He has always been honest with me, including a few rollockings, but he has never let me down and I enjoy working for him.

“I would have been just as happy to get an Escort as an Aston Martin as it's someone giving you something you are not entitled to.”

Beneath all the publicity the gesture has generated, it is clear the chairman values his manager highly and wants to make him feel wanted by the club as he tries to steer them to promotion.

Radford told Mansfield 103.2: “I was thrilled by the score. Now I'd like to see if my scoreboard can actually produce a 10 so that's my next target for Paul.

“I promised Paul a new car and the registration said 51 so I was quote pleased he delivered a 5-1 score by half-time.

“Paul needed a better car than the one he was driving and he liked it. It stops him going to any other club, hopefully.

“Paul was over the moon, but he failed me a bit with the 8-1 when I said I wanted a 5-1.”

He added: “I am delighted with the way things are coming together and the team spirit. It's all about keeping the continuity.

“At the beginning of the season there were a few niggles. But you have to keep with it and stick with it, which we have done, and now, hopefully, we will start to eke out the results and move up the table.”

Mansfield Town were motoring when they clocked up an 8-1 win over Barrow — and so impressed was chairman John Radford, he gave his Aston Martin to manager Paul Cox as a reward.
The keys to the £85,000 Vantage Coupe, with the registration MT51 COX, were handed over after a Matt Green hat-trick, helped wrap up a Blue Square Premier win.

Radford, 56, who is also the club's owner, had only got to One Call Stadium at half-time after returning from Ireland and was so blown away by the 5-1 scoreline that he told Cox the car was his.

The manager said: 'I'm not sure if it's a wind-up. Maybe I'll get to the car park and find a bike with some stabilisers on it.'

Mansfield Town owner fulfills promise to give coach his Aston Martin after big win

What non-league managers get when their teams score five by halftime. (AstonMartin.com)

Over the last few months, positive results on the pitch for Mansfield Town manager Paul Cox have brought about some pretty wonderful changes in his life. In a bet with Mansfield chief executive Carolyn Radford, Cox agreed to move up his wedding date if they beat fellow non-league side Lincoln City in the second round of the FA Cup last December, which they did. In January, Cox was offered a free honeymoon by a sponsor if he could beat Liverpool in the third round of the tournament, but the Stags came up short, losing 2-1. Prior to Saturday's Conference match against lowly Barrow, Cox had a chance at an even better wedding gift when the club's owner, John Radford (Carolyn's husband), offered to give Cox his Aston Martin DB9 if Mansfield could score five goals in the first half.

The score at halftime: Mansfield Town 5, Barrow 1. And Radford wasted no time in living up to his end of the bargain. From the Nottingham Post:

Radford only arrived at the One Call Stadium at half time, after travelling back from Ireland, and informed Cox at the break that he was giving him his car. [...]

The car was there, gleaming in the car park, complete with personalised registration MT51 COX.

You can see Cox's new Aston (complete with personalized registration plate) here.

Mansfield Town ended up beating Barrow 8-1 to match the club's best home result in their 116-year history. But Radford's wager was always a risky one since they beat Barrow, who are currently in the relegation zone, 7-0 in the corresponding fixture last season.

Perhaps Roman Abramovich should follow Radford's example and start motivating Chelsea managers with free Aston Martins instead of the threat of the sack.

Mansfield manager Paul Cox was rewarded for the club's 8-1 victory on Saturday with an Aston Martin from the club's chairman, John Radford.

After the Blue Square Bet Premier side won 5-0 against Dartford last weekend, Radford told Cox the car – worth £80,000 – would be his if his players could score five in the first half this Saturday at home to Barrow.

And thanks to goals from Lee Stevenson, Matt Green (two), Colin Daniel and Adam Murray, the Stags went in 5-1 up at the break.

After the full-time whistle Radford showed he was a man of his word by handing over the keys to a clearly disbelieving Cox, who said in his post-match press conference: 'As for the car, I'm not sure if it is wind-up. Maybe I'll get into the car park and it will be a bicycle with some stabilisers on it.'

The motor even features a personalised number plate – MT51 COX – but Radford admitted: 'It's my old Aston Martin so it's not brand new. It's a couple of years old.

'You've got to give people targets and things like that, so he fancied the car and I thought I'm about ready for a change and he did the job.'

It's not the first time Radford, who took over his hometown club in 2010, has raised eyebrows. In 2011 he married the club's chief executive Carolyn Still, who at 30 is 16 years his junior

Perhaps there is a lot more glamour in the lower leagues than they are given credit for.

Reports over the weekend reveal that Mansfield chairman John Radford promised his manager Paul Cox his personalised Aston Martin DB9 if his side could score five goals in the first half against Barrow.

In March 2012, Mansfield had beaten Barrow 7-0 and Radford was keen for another big scor eline.

Radford duly arrived at the One Call Stadium at half time with Mansfield 5-0 up in a game they would go on to win 8-1 in the Conference.

Radford said: “It's my old Aston Martin so it's not brand new. It's a couple of years old. You have these things and you've got to give people targets and things like that, so he fancied the car and I thought I'm about ready for a change and he did the job.”

Cox couldn't quite beleive it, “I didn't really take him at face value when we was talking, but to be fair to the man he's a top guy and when he did it, it was unbelievable.”
