NEW DEFENDER IN
29th November 2002 18:06

Stags have completed the loan signing of Manchester City defender Ryhs Day. Twenty year old Day featured on loan for Blackpool towards the end of last season where he made 13 appearances, his only professional appearances to date, having not made the Manchester City first team. He can operate at left back as well as at the centre of defence. He has been cleared to play in the Stags FA Cup tie at Crewe next week and will make his debut tomorrow at Port Vale.

From mansfieldtown.net: A New Face should be seen around Field Mill from today. Rhys Day of Manchester City will be joining the stags on an initial 1 month loan contract in a bid to strengthen our leaky defence. Rhys is a capable and versatile player that has been well thought of at the clubs he has played for. Welsh youngster, Rhys, was a surprise inclusion in Joe Royle's first team squad for the 2000-01 pre-season tour of Ireland. Featuring in both games against Linfield and Drogheda the youngster impressed and, indeed, was unlucky not to score in the latter match with a couple of powerful headers. Rhys continued to progress, captaining the Under-19 and Under-17 sides and managed to break into the Welsh U21 squad. Before rounding his season off with an appearance on the first team bench as an unused substitute in the final match of City's 2000-01 Premiership campaign. Rhys was hoping to make a first team impact under Kevin Keegan, but the Blues boss chose to send the young defender out on loan to Blackpool until the end of the season to obtain some first team experience.
-----------
Rhys Day is now officially a temporary member of the Stags after formalizing the agreement with the signing of a 1 month contract and he will be starting tomorrow afternoon at Vale Park. Also, talks with Kevin Keegan have brought even more good news, that Rhys has been given permission to be FA Cup tied so will feature in the FA Cup Rnd 2 Draw against Crewe next week. Rhys who comes from a sporting family , the brother of proffessional Snooker player Ryan Day was on loan at Blackpool last season so got some first team experience under his belt. We are hoping that the presence of this player will produce similar results to when Tony Vaughan joined us From Forest earlier this season. Another Man City graduate Vaughan proved a real asset in the left back position so everybody is hoping that Day another left footer will drive us forward and even consider an extension to his contract - but we will have to wait and see.
