Cox makes double swoop
mansfieldtown.net, Fri 01 Jun 2012

Paul Cox has made a double swoop in the transfer market by agreeing deals for Chris Clements and Jamie Tolley from July 01.

http://www.mansfieldtown.net/page/NewsDetail/0,,10325~2795254,00.html

Former Crewe Alexandra trainee Clements has signed from Hednesford Town for an undisclosed fee after Paul Cox beat off interest from several league and non-league clubs to capture the central midfielder.

The 22-year-old netted 17 goals last season for the Evo-Stik Northern Premier outfit and was on trial at Championship club Burnley earlier last month.

Experienced midfielder Jamie Tolley, 29, has amassed over 250 league appearances with Macclesfield, Hereford and Shrewsbury, where he spent seven years.

He joins on a free transfer from Wrexham, where he scored five goals in over 35 league appearances last season.

Commenting on the new arrivals manager Paul Cox told mansfieldtown.net: "In Chris Clements, we have signed one of the best footballers outside of the Conference National. He is technically very gifted and has a good range of passing.

"Jamie Tolley is an experienced midfielder who plays box to box. He fits into our winning mentality and will give us good energy in midfield."

Cox added: "We are in the process of talking to numerous players who we think will improve the strength of our squad."

Mansfield Town boss Paul Cox delighted after making double swoop
Saturday, June 02, 2012 Nottingham Post

MANSFIELD Town boss Paul Cox believes the Stags have landed a real creative gem in Chris Clements.

http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/story-16258443-detail/story.html

They have swooped to sign the midfielder from Evo-Stik Northern Premier side Hednesford for an undisclosed fee.

The announcement came yesterday, when the Stags also confirmed they had captured the signing of experienced midfielder Jamie Tolley, on a free from Wrexham.

Despite moving up two tiers, Cox says 22-year-old Clements can make a real impact right from the start of next season.

"We have watched him a lot last season and he has really impressed," said Cox.

"He is just an all-round midfielder. He scored 17 goals last season from midfield, he is being chased by a lot of clubs and the lad has a bit of everything.

"Chris is sharp, technically gifted but he can do the horrible things as well.

"He is only a young lad but he has a very good future ahead of him in the game.

"We are not looking for him to sit in the reserves; we are looking for him to come straight into the first-team and be ready from the start.

"I believe he can play in the Football League."

Clements came through the academy system at Crewe Alexandra and after a loan spell with Hednesford, joined the Pitmen permanently in the summer of 2010.

Tolley, 29, has amassed over 250 league appearances with Macclesfield, Hereford and Shrewsbury, where he spent seven years.

Cox added: "Jamie Tolley is an experienced midfielder who plays box to box.

"He fits into our winning mentality and will give us good energy in midfield."

The pair, who officially join on July 1, are Cox's first close- season signings and the Stags boss believes the club now has more pulling power after last season when they finished third in the Blue Square Bet Premier, only to lose in the play-off semi-finals to York City, who were eventually promoted.

Cox added: "We are in the process of talking to numerous players who we think will improve the strength of our squad."

Jamie Tolley joined Mansfield after he was 'disappointed' with deal on offer at Wrexham FC
by Mark Currie, Daily Post Wales West, Jun 2 2012

WREXHAM FC'S out-of-contract midfielder Jamie Tolley is targeting a third successive promotion campaign next season after joining Blue Square Bet Premier League rivals Mansfield Town with effect from July 1.

http://www.dailypost.co.uk/sport-news/wrexham-fc/2012/06/02/55578-31096556/

Ending a two-year stay at the Racecourse that saw Wrexham FC reach the end-of-season play-offs on both occasions the 29-year-old admitted he was disappointed to have been offered only a six-month extension to his Dragons' contract.

“After the season we had in getting to 98 points – a total that most teams would be lucky to get again – and after 39 appearances for the team, I was disappointed with the contract I was offered,” said Jamie Tolley yesterday.

“The fact is that the 12-month deal I have been offered by Mansfield gives me a bit more security and that was the main consideration.

“Football is a short enough career as it is and you have to look after yourself because it's a dog-eat-dog situation and when I saw other (Wrexham) players who didn't play as many games being offered 12-month deals I was very disappointed.

“Now Mansfield have come in and I'm very excited to go there and see what we can achieve next year.”

Under manager Paul Cox, the Stags finished third in the campaign just ended and were beaten in the promotion play-off final by York City, and Tolley, is confident that both his old and new clubs will be in the mix again next season.

“I'm sure the likes of Mansfield, Wrexham and Luton will all be up there again next year,” he added. “Like Wrexham, Mansfield are an ambitious club and it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

“I have a lot of very good friends at Wrexham, including Mozza (player-manager Andy Morrell), and I have no problems with any of them. I have enjoyed my time there and it's just such a shame that we didn't get promotion.

“But it's the off-field situation that has dictated the next step of my career and my ambition now is to win promotion with Mansfield.”

In all, Tolley made 68 appearances for Wrexham FC, scoring 11 goals along the way, and is seen by his new boss Cox as a useful acquisition.

“Jamie is an experienced midfielder who plays from box to box,” he said. “He fits into our winning mentality and will give us good energy in midfield.”

Wrexham FC, meanwhile, have confirmed a second pre-season friendly at Welsh Premier Aberystwyth Town on Saturday, July 14 (3pm ko).

Clements Keen on Pro Return
10th May 2012
http://nonleague.pitchero.com/news/clements-keen-on-pro-return-13115/

Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division club Hednesford Town's midfielder Chris Clements appears set.....
.....for a move back into full-time football, with Blue Square Bet Premier outfit Mansfield Town heading the list of possible suitors.

Pitmen boss Rob Smith confirmed he's spoken to Mansfield counterpart Paul Cox about Clements but insisted they were not formal talks.

The ex-Crewe Alexandra trainee was on trial at npower Championship side Burnley last week and is keen to return to the pro game.

Smith told the Express & Star: “The ball is in their Mansfield's court – as yet it's a conversation between two managers.

“We spoke about many things and Chris was something that was mentioned during that.”

And Smith confirmed that the club have taken their option to extend Clements' contract for another year, so they should get compensation.

The manager said: “There is interest from a lot of clubs and, although we are keen to keep him, I wouldn't want to stand in the way of a full-time offer.

“I have spoken to Chris and I totally accept he wants to play at a higher level – in some ways he needs to move on.

“But any deal also has to be right for the club.”

Clements scored in Burnley's reserve match against Tranmere last week and was instrumental in the Clarets' 3-1 win.

The 22-year-old has caught the eye since arriving from Crewe in March 2010, following a short loan spell at Keys Park.

In his second season at the club, the Birmingham-born man landed the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League's young player of the year award.

Clements felt his Burnley trial went well, but added that he would only leave Hednesford for a move to a full-time club.

He said: “It did me good to have the opportunity to show what I can do – there was a lot more passing, which suited me.

“I was nervous and just wanted to impress whoever was watching.

“But it went well, once I had settled down, and just playing at Turf Moor was an experience in itself.

“I want to play as high as I can, either in the Football League or full-time football and I wouldn't want to go anywhere else if it was only part-time.

“Since I left Crewe, Hednesford have took me in and I have learned a lot.”

Clements' agent Gino Culbertson revealed Burnley have already asked to take a closer look at the player.

Culbertson said: “Chris impressed tremendously at Burnley and they want him back in pre-season.

“But we have to look at all options – it's very important he makes the right move at this stage of his career.”
