Cox backs Day to be major player at Stags in 2011-12

RHYS Day can be a key performer for Mansfield Town in 2011-12, manager Paul Cox insisted today.

The Welsh defender made just eight league appearances for the Stags last season after joining, initially on loan, from Oxford United in October.

He was troubled be knee problems and played his last game in the 3-3 draw with Newport in mid-February, eventually undergoing surgery.

But Cox knows that Day could play a vital role for the Stags if he can regain full fitness.

The 28-year-old was a firm favourite in his first spell at Field Mill and helped Aldershot to the Conference title in 2007-2008.

"I have had a good chat with Rhys and he's told me that Mansfield fans have not really seen him at all since he's been back – certainly not the best of him," said Cox.

"The injury he has had (damage to the patella tendon) can be career-threatening, but he is making decent progress.

"He is going to Lilleshall as well before the season starts because he wants to be fit for the start of the season.

"It may take him a little bit longer than the others to get back up to speed, but it's important we don't rush him.

"If we can get him fit, then we have a cracking centre half on our hands.

"He has done it before at Aldershot and a fit Rhys Day has got a lot to offer both on and off the pitch."

Cox is also hoping to hang on to another central defender – highly-rated youngster Tom Naylor, who was reportedly interesting Leeds United
