The 19 year old featured heavily in Vale's reserve team last season but was unable to break into the first team.

The left back, who began playing for The Valiants' second side at just 15 years of age feels he is now ready to make the step up to first team action and said after signing: "I know I am ready to make the step up. I was ready before [at Port Vale] but was never given the chance to prove myself. I want to repay the faith Paul Cox has shown in me."

Manager Paul Cox added: "Matt was very unlucky not to have a good stint in the Vale first team last season. I have been aware of him for quite a while from various reserve matches in which I have seen him play.

"He has a lovely left foot, is tenacious, has high fitness levels and can play at left-back, left-midfield and even in central midfield."

Bell, 19, is a left-back who has just been released by Port Vale while midfielder Howell, 25, from Alfreton Town, has spent a previous spell at Field Mill.

Both players have agreed one-year deals and boss Paul Cox said: "Matt is someone I have had my eye on for a year now. He has a lovely left foot, a tremendous attitude and can get up and down the pitch. He is a player who will develop.

"People may question why I have brought Anthony back here, but he is a totally different player now. He was a striker here last time and though he can play there, behind the front two and on the left, I see him primarily as a central midfielder.

"He was one of the best in the Conference North last season."
