Smith rejects York to sign for Stags

Flying winger Adam Smith has turned down a contract offer with York City to sign a one year deal with us, we are pleased to announce.

The 25 year old made 18 starts and 15 substitute appearances for the Minstermen last season.

He began his career at Chesterfield in 2002, where he made over 70 appearances.

After putting pen to paper, he told mansfieldtown.net: "I'm absolutely over the moon and am already looking forward to my career with the Stags.

"This club is going the right way. There is clear ambition here and the manager is determined to put the club back in the Football League.

"I have a good gut feeling about this move," he added.

Manager David Holdsworth said: "I am delighted to capture someone of Adam's versatility. He can play on either wing and up front.

"He shows both pace and dynamism to our forward line."

His contract will start on 01 July.

by Martin Shaw:

Adam Smith came on as a sub in the game between Mansfield and York at Field Mill in March. He came on in the 90th minute, and actually got quite a lot of the ball in stoppage time. He made 3 good runs and played two good passes.

One of his runs ended with a decent shot that forced Marriott into a decent save, and this made it into my highlights package, right at the end --->

He played in bright red boots.

He was an unused sub in the game at Bootham Crescent.

Smith looks to kickstart career with Stags
Evening Post, May 21, 2010

ADAM Smith is hoping to kick-start his career at Mansfield Town after the heartache on missing out on a Wembley appearance.

http://www.thisismansfieldtown.co.uk/news/Smith-looks-kickstart-career-Stags/article-2184166-detail/article.html?

The 25-year-old utility player was left out of York City's squad as they lost their Blue Square Premier play-off final 3-1 to Oxford United last Sunday.
The former Chesterfield and Lincoln man – who can play on either wing, up front or in central midfield – believes he can return to Wembley with the Stags next season, after signing a one-year deal at Field Mill.
"Martin Foyle was very good to me at York and they offered me a new deal but I just felt it was time for a change," said Smith.
"I was very disappointed not to play at Wembley, especially as I had figured in the semi-final against Luton.
"It hurt. I couldn't sleep that night and I was a bit snappy with my family the next day.
"I was offered a new deal at York but I've signed for Mansfield because I believe they are a club going in the right direction, can get to Wembley next season and go up through the play-offs.
"I also think that the travelling to York (from Chesterfield) was starting to affect my performances."
Smith revealed he chose to move to Field Mill after talking to Mansfield striker Jake Speight.
He said: "I had a chat with the gaffer and Jake, who is a good friend of mine, and liked what I heard."

The 25-year-old has agreed a one-year deal at Field Mill and trained with his new team-mates yesterday.
Smith made 14 starts and 14 substitute appearances for the Minstermen last season, scoring twice.
The Huddersfield-born player came on as a replacement when York were 1-0 victors at the Stags in March.
Smith came through the youth ranks at Chesterfield, where he spent seven seasons, and has also had spell at Gainsborough and Lincoln.
He can play on either wing, up front and also in central midfield.
Meanwhile, Luke Beckett, recently released by Gainsborough Trinity after refusing a new contract, has been linked with a move to Mansfield.
Stags manager David Holdsworth said: "Luke is a good player and a goalscorer, but it all comes down to financial demands."

Smith can add goals from out wide, says Stags boss
Evening Post , 7 July 2010
ADAM Smith can add the goal threat from out wide – where Mansfield Town lacked last season, believes boss David Holdsworth.

http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/football/Smith-add-goals-wide-says-Stags-boss/article-2386405-detail/article.html?

Smith has made the switch from play-off finalists York City in search of regular first team football after being in and out of the Minstermen's team.

The former Chesterfield and Lincoln player can operate on the wing or as one of the flanking players in a three-man strike force.

Either way, Holdsworth expects Smith to increase Mansfield's firepower.

"Adam is a player who I have admired for a long time as he has pace, athleticism and versatility," he said.

"He's got a hunger and desire to continue to improve his game and he's two-footed, so he's comfortable down either wing.

"We didn't score many goals from wide areas last year but I believe that is an area where Adam can help us."

Adam Smith desperate to start at Mansfield Town

BBC.co.uk
New Mansfield Town signing Adam Smith says he is desperate to be a first-team regular after a frustrating season with play-off finalists York City last term.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/m/mansfield_town/8701615.stm?

Winger Smith, 25, only started 18 games last season and is itching to get more pitch time in 2010/11.

He told BBC Radio Nottingham: "It was time for a change after not getting as much football as I would have liked.

"I'm still young, Mansfield are going in the right direction and I'm excited about the new season."

The former Chesterfield player made 15 substitute appearances for York last season but struggled to win a regular spot.

And although he knows he was often left out for tactical reasons and was offered a new contract, he said he did not want to be a bit-part player.

"It was highly frustrating especially, when you feel you can make an impact," Smith explained.

"But things came to an end when you feel it is right. I needed to go elsewhere to progress my career. And I think I've made the right choice in coming to Mansfield.

"I'm dying to get back into the Football League and it would be good to do it with a promotion.

"Hopefully I can chip in with a few goals, a few assists and bring a bit of attacking flair. I can play up front as well."

WINGER Adam Smith has swiftly switched wide patrols by joining York City's Blue Square Premier adversaries Mansfield Town.

...

The double development comes less than a day after Foyle declared he was still in talks with Smith.

But the 25-year-old wide player has opted instead to sign for the Stags.

Of his new deal, Smith told the Mansfield website he was “absolutely over the moon”, adding: “This club is going the right way.

“There is clear ambition here and the manager is determined to put the club back in the Football League.”

The about-turn by the winger is hot on the heels of City boss Foyle revealing how he had offered both Smith and central defender Djoumin Sangare the chance to return to Bootham Crescent for pre-season training to prove their fitness and form.

Explained Foyle: “If they come back and do the business, I will look after them.”

Huddersfield-born Smith, who made 19 appearances for City last season, plus 17 as a sub, scoring two goals, has opted to leap at Mansfield's interest.

The 25-year-old struggled to make much of an impression at Bootham Crescent last season and was restricted to just eighteen starts and fifteen appearances from the bench. He scored twice.

"I'm absolutely over the moon and am already looking forward to my career with the Stags," Smith told Mansfield's official website.

"This club is going the right way. There is clear ambition here and the manager is determined to put the club back in the Football League. I have a good gut feeling about this move," he added.
