Clare leaves for Gateshead

mansfieldtown.net, Fri 08 Jan 2010

Striker Daryl Clare has today made a permanent switch to Gateshead after indicating he no longer wanted to play for Mansfield Town and stating his desire to play part time football.

http://www.mansfieldtown.net/page/NewsDetail/0,,10325~1927155,00.html?

The 31 year old frontman signed for us 9 months ago from Rushden and Diamonds and has scored three goals in 21 appearances.

He was sent out to join Gateshead in October to gain match practice and bagged nine goals in 13 appearances.

After his loan spell expired earlier this month, Clare stated his desire to move away from Field Mill during a meeting with manager David Holdsworth on Monday and has subsequently moved on a free transfer.

"For Daryl to tell us that he didn't want to pull on a Mansfield shirt is disappointing," David Holdsworth told mansfieldtown.net.

"Daryl and I have maintained a very good relationship, and I haven't seen this coming.

"He has trained with us in recent weeks and we have done everything we can from him.

"Given his reputation, both the Chairman and I tried everything to try and get him here. We tried to help rescue his career, but I can only deal with the facts, and those are that Daryl no longer wants to play for Mansfield Town.

"We gave him the opportunity to go out and get games and I feel we have got the raw end of the stick."

Clare bombshell as he turns back on Stags
CHAD.co.uk, 08 January 2010, By John Lomas
DARYL Clare has dropped a bombshell on Mansfield Town after telling them he wants to go part-time and opting to stay at BSP rivals Gateshead.

http://www.chad.co.uk/stags/Clare-bombshell-as-he-turns.5967932.jp

Hotshot Clare's decision came as a bolt from the blue for Stags who had assumed that, having regained his full sharpness and eye for goal on loan on Tyneside, he would return to Field Mill to help Stags in their promotion push.

Chairman Andy Perry and manager David Holdsworth are bitterly upset with Clare's decision after investing much time and money into helping him both on and off the field where he is said to have many private problems.

The 31 year old frontman signed for Mansfield nine months ago from Rushden and Diamonds and has scored three goals in 21 appearances.

He was sent out to join Gateshead in October to gain match practice and bagged nine goals in 13 appearances.

A club statement today read: "We are hugely disappointed with Daryl Clare's decision to turn his back on the club.

"We have him an opportunity and we are disappointed that he has decided he doesn't want to pull a Mansfield Town shirt on again."

Clare has continued to do limited training at Field Mill while on loan at part-time Gateshead.

And there was a huge anticipation around the ground for his full-time return.

But the shock new situation began to emerge late last week.

"Things unfolded last week on Friday when I got a phone call from Daryl's representative saying he wanted a meeting with me," said Holdsworth.

"I had seen Daryl frequently over the last two or three months at training, though not every day as I had to manage his training with careful planning.

"At no time did he give me any indication he was unhappy or didn't want to return to our football club.

"On Monday I had a call from a gentleman representing Gateshead to tell me Daryl wanted to stay there which was a surprise.

"After training on Monday Daryl came into my office and I asked him to express his views to me. What he told me came as a real surprise and I was taken aback."

He added: "He is at a stage of his life where he has private matters and issues, which must remain private, off the pitch.

"We were aware of most of those issues and I have dealt with them in an understanding fashion.

"There are two sides I have to deal with here. But, off the field, his lifestyle and private matters are influential on his career.

"The most important question I asked him was if he was willing to pull on a Mansfield shirt again for the football club and the fans and his decision was no."

Stags chairman Andy Perry has been on holiday in the USA and was equally shocked by the news.

"I know the chairman is very disappointed to hear that Daryl has decided to turn his back on Mansfield and I have kept in contact with him throughout," said Holdsworth.

"The chairman and I worked extremely intensely to bring Daryl to this club. He was a man with a very good goalscoring record at this level and we saw it as a major coup for us.

"Pre-season and early season he had some off-field problems which will remain private.

"Daryl struggled to maintain the standards we were expecting and he came to me and suggested he would like to go out on loan.

"I was very reluctant to do this as I felt he still had a lot to offer this football club, even though he had only scored a couple of penalties for us.

"Eventually I allowed him to go out and I saw Gateshead as an ideal opportunity to keep Daryl playing at the highest level.

"I managed him in a very practical way to maintain his levels as Gateshead is not round the corner and he lives near Skegness.

"So to be told he didn't want to return and pull on the shirt again after myself and the chairman had worked so hard to help him was a bitter pill to swallow.

"He said his life was now designed in a different way to the start of the season and I understand his reasons for wanting to part-time.

"But we brought him here as a talisman for our football club.

"He is contracted to us. But I have to deal with this in the best interest of our football club and I have now secured a good deal with Gateshead for Daryl to join them on a permanent basis.

"At 31 he says he doesn't want to play and train full time with the ethics we have here.

"While I have huge respect for him as a person and a player I am still hugely disappointed by that."

Holdsworth today gathered his troops together to break the shock news after the move was confirmed and there was no going back.

"I have told the boys Daryl was moving on and they are aware and wish him well," said Holdsworth.

"But they are not put out. It just makes us all come closer together.
"We are currently fourth and in a wonderful position. So we saw this as the ideal time for him to return for the run-in as he would give us increased competition for places.

"Over the last few days I have tried to convince him to change his mind.

"However, last night he reconfirmed he had no desire to come back to Mansfield and was grateful I would let him go.

"We are flying right now and Daryl would have been a great addition with injury, illness and suspensions ahead before the end of the season.

"But no one player is bigger than the team or the club. This place is run on team work and team ethics."

At least the freeing-up of Clare's wages gives Holdsworth more flexibility in the January transfer window, though he stressed he was happy with what he has and so didn't need to jump into anything.

"I have made an enquiry about a right winger and a striker to a League One club," he said.

"With Louis Briscoe and Jake Speight able to play down the middle, I may push harder for a right winger as we already have goals in us.

"And I am already looking at three or four centre halves.

"I tried to get Andy Nicholas from Rotherham as he is a big centre half with a great throw-in, but we are not going to be able to afford him so I will look elsewhere.

"But I am not desperate for players. I am very content with my squad and we will have Kyle Nix back from injury in the next two or three weeks as well."

Under the terms of the deal, Clare will not be able to play against Stags at Field Mill when Gateshead visit later this season.

Striker Clare departs Stags

MANSFIELD Town striker Daryl Clare has today made a permanent switch to fellow Blue Square side Gateshead.

He was sent out to Gateshead on loan in October where he has bagged nine goals in 13 appearances.

Holdsworth angered by Clare departure
Evening Post, January 09, 2010

ANGRY Mansfield Town manager David Holdsworth today claimed wantaway striker Daryl Clare had 'let the club down' by leaving for Gateshead.

http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/football/Holdsworth-angered-Clare-departure/article-1690061-detail/article.html?

The man who signed from Rushden and Diamonds amid much fanfare ninth months ago was yesterday granted his request to join the north-east club after a successful loan spell.
Clare made his feelings clear in a meeting at Field Mill on Monday.
And despite Holdsworth's best efforts to convince the 31-year-old to stay, the player's mind was made up.
It is a stance that has annoyed the Stags boss, who was looking forward to seeing a rejuvenated Clare – scorer of nine goals in 13 appearances for the Heed – compete with the likes of Rob Duffy, Kyle Perry and Jake Speight.
"We have invested a lot of hard work into getting Daryl here in the first place and have then worked hard to get him fit," said Holdsworth. "We have also been understanding when he has had personal problems, so for him to decide he doesn't want to play for us is disappointing.
"I feel he has let the club and the chairman down.
"I could have refused Gateshead and kept him here, but having a player who was our highest paid sitting and sulking in the stands or in the dressing room would not be good.
"We have a wonderful team spirit here at Field Mill and the last thing I want is to put that in jeopardy with an unhappy player."
Holdsworth already has his eyes on replacements for Clare and is hopeful of bringing in another front man before the close of the January transfer window.
He said: "As soon as I got an inkling that Daryl wanted out I have had targets in mind."
Mansfield's scheduled game against Luton Town today was postponed due to snow and a frozen pitch. It is now on Tuesday March 2.

from Gateshead Official site:

Clare will also be unable to face his former club with Gateshead due to play Mansfield at Field Mill on 6th February.
While Mansfield have allowed their high profile summer signing to move for a free part of the deal involves a sell on clause should there be one.

It's all Clare as ace signs
Jan 9 2010, by Paul New, Evening Chronicle
GATESHEAD's Blue Square Premier survival bid has received a massive boost with the capture of Mansfield Town striker Daryl Clare.

http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/non-league-football/2010/01/09/it-s-all-clare-as-ace-signs-72703-25560783/?

The 31-year-old Republic of Ireland B and Under-21 international yesterday agreed an 18-month deal.

Clare is approaching 200 Conference goals, has twice won the Conference Golden Boot and played a key role in Boston United and Chester City's title- winning campaigns.

There is a clause that will allow the former Grimsby Town front man to move on should Gateshead be relegated, but the Jersey-born player is confident that won't happen.

Clare said: “I have enjoyed my three months on loan at Gateshead. I am delighted to have made the move permanent and I'm confident we will survive.

“The players are a close-knit bunch, and the team spirit is great which is important when you are scrapping away at the wrong end of the table.

“Hopefully I will continue to score goals and we can climb the table. Ian Bogie's brand of football suits my style and I have enjoyed my time on Tyneside.”

Bogie made the signing of Clare a priority after the experienced front man scored nine goals in 13 games before returning briefly to Mansfield Town.

He said: “Clare is a quality player who brings others into play and has a great touch. He has scored valuable goals and is a great signing.

“The fact that we have been able to secure a player of Daryl's pedigree shows how far this club has come.

“He is an experienced pro who is great around the dressing room and he has enjoyed his time at Gateshead and the style of football we play.

“His goalscoring ratio so far has been tremendous and, if he can maintain that high standard, it will go a long way to securing our Blue Square Premier status.”

Despite signing a permanent deal at Gateshead, Lincolnshire-based Clare will not be allowed to play against former club Mansfield when Gateshead travel to Field Mill on February 6.

I've got no 'lifestyle problems' says Clare
By Stuart Hammonds, The Non-League Paper, 10 Jan 2009

Daryl Clare has refused to become involved in a public row with David Holdsworth - despite the Mansfield manager claiming Clare had lifestyle problems which were affecting his football.
The 31-year-old striker has signed for Gateshead on a free transfer after scoring nine goals in 13 matches on loan at the Internatioanl Stadium. His deal runs until the end of the season, with an option for next year if the Tynesiders stay up.
The ex-Boston, Chester, Crawley, Burton and Rushden goal ace belived he had left Field Mill, where he signed last January, on amicable terms.
But Holdsworth told the Stags' website on Friday: "For Daryl to tell us he didn't want to pull on a Mansfield shirt is disappointing. We have done eveything we can for him.
"The chairman and I tried everything to get him here. We tried to help rescue his career. We gave him the opportunity to go out and get games and I feel that we have got the raw end of the stick."
In a video interview, he added: "Daryl has private matters, and certainly issues, that he had to deal with off the pitch. It's not for me to question what Daryl does away from the club. He was struggling, not just physically, but off the pitch."
Inevitably, rumours started among Stags fans over exactly what the 'problems' were.
But Clare, speaking exclusively to The NLP, said: "The problems I had when I signed - my wife's illness after giving birth to our daughter and the FA hearing to get my wages from Rushden - were well-documented. They happened together and it was a tough time, but that's old news.
"I closed down my property business in pre-season because of the recession, and with four children I've got a hectic lifestyle helping look after them. What dad doesn't?
"But I've got no other problems and I certainly didn't say I didn't want to pull on a Mansfield shirt again. I've been in the game long enough to know you don't say that.
"The truth is, I've only played a handful of minutes for Mansfield, and I didn't want to return to being a squad player.
"I went to Gateshead for games. They've really looked after me and we were well suited to each other in the style of play that Gateshead use.
"Nobody wanted the Mansfield move to work more than me. I would have liked to have gone back and played in front of the Mansfield supporters again and showed them what I am capable of."

Daryl Clare hits back at Mansfield Town claims
Jan 11 2010, Evening Chronicle
DARYL CLARE has hit back after Mansfield Town went on the defensive following the striker's permanent move to Gateshead, where he had just completed a successful loan period.

http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/non-league-football/2010/01/11/daryl-clare-hits-back-at-mansfield-town-claims-72703-25571884/?

Stags boss David Holdsworth, overlooked for the Gateshead job a few years ago when Ian Bogie was handed the reins at the International Stadium, cast Clare firmly in the role of villain.

Holdsworth claimed unspecified problems off the pitch, a desire to go part-time and a refusal to pull on a Mansfield shirt again were behind the move.

Clare, for whom Gateshead is his eighth club, signed for the Tynesiders on a free transfer instead of staying at Conference rivals Mansfield.

Holdsworth claimed Mansfield had rescued Clare's career after an unproductive spell at Rushden & Diamonds and that he was shocked at Clare's stance.

Holdsworth said: “Daryl came into my office and I asked him to express his views to me. What he told me came as a real surprise and I was taken aback.

“He is at a stage of his life where he has private matters and issues off the pitch. There are two sides I have to deal with here but, off the field, his lifestyle and private matters are influential on his career.

“The most important question I asked him was if he was willing to pull on a Mansfield shirt again for the club and the fans and his decision was no.

“The chairman and I worked extremely intensely to bring Daryl to this club. He was a man with a very good goalscoring record at this level and we saw it as a major coup for us.”

Mansfield allowed Clare to become FA Cup and Trophy-tied during his three-month loan on Tyneside – an indication the Ireland B international did not figure in the Stags' long-term plans.

Clare's scoring exploits at Gateshead, however, increased the pressure to keep the experienced striker at Field Mill.

Clare, however, refutes many of Holdsworth's claims and says that the biggest problem he had at Mansfield this season is that he only started two games.

“I thought I had left Mansfield amicably, but Holdsworth's comments are not only disappointing, but wide of the mark,” said Clare.

“I had family problems a year ago regarding my wife's health, and an FA Inquiry into the circumstances of my signing for Rushden dragged on.

“I also had to sell my property business due to the recession. However, there were no side issues when I started pre-season at Mansfield and I started the campaign with a clean slate.

“To suggest otherwise is misleading. Clubs and managers will always swing things in their favour, but I have no issues off the pitch and I'm disappointed Holdsworth has suggested otherwise.

“It was a split call whether to stay at Mansfield and push for promotion or join Gateshead and battle against relegation, but I never said I wouldn't pull on a Stags shirt again or play for the fans.

“It didn't work out for me at Mansfield Town but it's now time to move on. I am a Gateshead player now and at a club with ambitious plans for the future.”
