FORMER Stags hero Chris Greenacre is returning to Mansfield . . . but sadly not on the Field Mill pitch.
He is among a list of former players who have agreed to attend the Stags Fans United (SFU) Sportsman's Dinner on 24th September.

He will be making the trip down from Tranmere to support the fans group in its aim to raise funds at the dinner - starring former player and football legend Duncan McKenzie as the guest speaker - for the Stags.

Chris will be joining other Stags' legends including Kevin Bird, Ian Wood, Sandy Pate, Jimmy McCaffrey, Paul Mathews, Colin Foster, Mick Saxby, Mick Laverick and recent fans favourite Richie Barker among the guests.

Fans attending the dinner will be able to have their photographs taken with their heroes on the night.

The Sportsman's Dinner takes place at the John Fretwell Centre, Sookholme, at 7pm.

It will also include a comedian and an auction of a range of sporting memorabilia.

Tickets for the evening will be £35 and the price includes a three-course meal.

Ticket enquiries should be made to Richard Sharp on 07814737946 or sent to sfudinner@hotmail.com.

Stags legend McKenzie 'looking forward' to Mansfield return
CHAD.co.uk, 9 Sep 08

FOOTBALL legend Duncan McKenzie says he is looking forward to returning to Mansfield for a major fundraising event.
The former Nottingham Forest star, who had two spells with Mansfield Town at the start of his career, is the guest speaker at Stags Fans United's Sportsman's Dinner on 24th September.

McKenzie became Brian Clough's only signing during his ill-fated 44-day reign at Leeds United and later went on to star for Everton, Anderlecht, Chelsea and Blackburn Rovers.

An entertainer on and off the field, McKenzie initially attracted media attention for his achievements outside of the game, which included jumping over a mini and throwing a golf ball the length of a football pitch.

Duncan told Chad: "I have very fond memories of Mansfield Town and I am looking forward to coming back.

"It was a great experience and I think it helped saved my career –– not many players return from a loan spell at a club and then go straight back into the first team at their own club.

"I could have been lost from the league otherwise so I will always have a soft spot for the club."

McKenzie made 10 appearances for Stags in the 1969/70 season, scoring three goals, and returned briefly in the 1972/73 season, scoring seven goals in six games.

He said: "There were some great professionals at the club when I was there like Frank Wignall and Johnny Quigley and my old mate Jim McCaffrey and it was a great experience playing with them, they gave me some good advice.

"Although they had the best interests of the club at heart, they gave me encouragement and told me I could make it at a higher level.

"I remember Arthur Patrick (former Mansfield Town chairman) picking me up in his Jensen Interceptor one day and taking me on a drive around the field around Field Mill at about 60mph."

Since retiring as a player he has hosted 606 on BBC Radio 5 Live and has gained an excellent reputation on the after-dinner circuit.

"I enjoy making people laugh and they like listening to what I have to say –– I think anyone can enjoy my speeches regardless of how old they are," added Duncan.

"I talk about modern football as well as the old stories and how the game has gone from strength to strength over the years.

"I'm looking forward to coming back, it will be lovely to see the fans again and see who remembers me –– I'm sure we'll have a great night."

The Sportsman's Dinner takes place at the John Fretwell Centre, Sookholme, on 24th September at 7pm.

It will also include a comedian and an auction of a range of sporting memorabilia.

Tickets for the evening will be £35 and the price includes a three-course meal.
