DONCASTER ROVERS YOUTH 7 Mansfield Town Youth 1
The Rovers Youth team entertained their opposite numbers from Mansfield Town on a warm if dull morning. The home team started well enjoying the bulk of the play in the early stages of the game, with Lodge, in particular, to the fore by shooting at goal on every opportunity but without reward. Then, on 23 minutes, the ball was played down the Rovers left and hit low into the middle where HENDERSON, at the far post on the angle of the six yard box, met it and slammed into the net for the first goal. Five minutes later, Lodge, on the Rovers right, had another crack at goal but the ball went across the face of goal and out for a goal kick. The Rovers would not be denied and, on 31 minutes, Lodge fed GRIFFITHS, who hit a terrific strike from 25 yards into the bottom corner of the net to register a second goal. The visitors gradually got into the game as the half-time break loomed and were rewarded on 42 minutes, when TRIMMER chased a long ball down the inside right channel into the Rovers penalty area. Ward, the Rovers keeper came out and tackled him, the ball ran loose and the Mansfield man got there first to reduce the deficit to one goal. The half ended with the Rovers putting a corner in under the bar and the Mansfield keeper tipping over the bar for another corner.

The Rovers lads were straight out of the traps in the second half and added goal number three on 47 minutes when LODGE scored a cracking goal. Receiving the ball just over halfway into the Mansfield half he spotted the keeper off his line and chipped a great shot over the keeper and straight into the far top corner. Five minutes later and another goal followed when the home team were awarded a penalty. GRIFFITHS took the kick and calmly planted the ball to the keeper's right as he went left. Keeping up the pressure a further goal came on 65 minutes when a good build-up led to Lodge crossing from the right for FLETCHER, at the near post, to head down and into the net for the Rovers fifth goal. Mansfield then had a man, Goward, sent off for a bad foul on Griffiths, who required some attention before resuming. The visitors had been continuously on the defensive in this half and being down to ten men didn't help. After 76 minutes of play goal number six for the home team arrived when Lodge, on the left byline, put a low ball into the middle for HENDERSON to tap in. With seven minutes to go Lodge could have had another goal when he cut in from the left and shot as the keeper, Gibbons, came out. Gibbons deflected the ball and gave a defender the chance to get back and clear. But LODGE was not to be denied and on 87 minutes, from the left angle of the Mansfield penalty area, lofted a great ball into the far top corner of the net to round off a great morning for the Rovers Youth with a comprehensive 7-1 win.
