BUXTON STAYS AS STAGS SKIPPER
Evening Post, 05 Jul 2007

JAKE Buxton will remain as Mansfield Town captain for 2007-2008, manager Billy Dearden revealed today.

The 22-year-old defender was handed the skipper's role after Richard Barker left the Stags to join Hartlepool in January.

Dearden has been impressed with the way Buxton has handled the honour, feeling it inspired him to play some of the best football of his career.

There was speculation that the experienced Martin McIntosh might be given the armband after his summer move to Field Mill from Huddersfield.

But Dearden insists he has every intention of sticking with former youth teamer Buxton as his leader out on the field.

"Bucko will still be my captain because I think he did really well last season and he deserves to carry that on," said Dearden..

"Since I gave him the responsibility I think it has made him into a better player.

"He has the respect of everyone in the dressing room and he gets on well with all the players.

"There will be the older lads he can call on if he does need any advice, but I think he will be fine."

Buxton demonstrated his leadership qualities when he played through the pain barrier in the 0-0 derby draw with Notts County in March.

But he was ruled out for the rest of the season soon after by a persistent knee injury which required surgery.
