JELLS TAKES A PAY CUT TO STAY
Evening Post, 11 June 2007

Billy Dearden today heaped praise on left-back Gareth Jelleyman for taking a pay cut to stay at Mansfield.

The former Peterborough defender has agreed a new one-year deal, which will be the Welshman's fourth season at the club.

That has delighted Dearden, who reckons persuading the 26-year-old to stay is as much of a coup as last week's new signings of John McAliskey and Dan Martin.

"I'm very pleased that Jells has signed. He's taking a drop in wages which is rare in today's climate," he said.

"I think that shows how committed he is to the club - and the sort of lad he is.

"He just wants to play his football and he isn't too bothered about anything else.

"He's probably been one of my top three players since I came to the club and his signing is just as important as the two new lads coming in."

Jelleyman is now one of the most experienced players on the Stags' books, despite his age. He has made 95 starts for the club in all competitions, scoring twice.

The Holyhead-born player is expected to be back for the start of pre-season training in July after missing the closing games of the season with an Achilles tendon injury.
