Go-ahead for Stags' stand plan

Planning permission means the football club can transform the existing stand into an all-new 32m-long feature including community facilities and a creche. But Stags chairman Keith Haslam yesterday confirmed that while he welcomed the approval, any plans for the Bishop Street stand have been suspended while the club concentrates on current development work on the West Stand. His comments came after Mansfield Council's planning committee formally gave the green light to the proposals on Monday and followed previous statements by Mr Haslam that facilities originally earmarked for Bishop Street are now being incorporated into the West Stand. He told Chad last week: "Finances in football are very tight right now and we have voids within the West Stand where we can put these facilities." And he added that work on the newly kitted out West Stand interior including an internet caf , classrooms and a study centre - is expected to be completed in time for the match against Chesterfield on 24th August. Yesterday Mr Haslam said the Bishop Street plans were another piece in the jigsaw for modernising Field Mill and told Chad: "The planning approval lasts for up to five years so hopefully during that time we can start looking at the project again. "We are a club that is constantly trying to develop things which involve the community." Fears had originally been raised over the stand's impact on nearby residents, with many expressing concerns that access to the new facilities would be overrun with vehicles and add to the parking problems already on Bishop Street. |
