Adam Birchall, the 22-year-old Kevin Phillips lookalike striker who has proved a big hit with Barnet supporters while on loan from Mansfield Town, has signed a new deal on a free transfer (until the end of the season).

The former Arsenal trainee, who started at Highbury at the age of 10 and was a prolific goalscorer up to under-19 level, joined the Bees on loan in November until Tuesday. He has scored three goals in five appearances since making his debut from the bench at Bristol Rovers, an FA Cup goal against Northampton Town, the matchwinner against Peterborough United and the clincher against Bury.

Birchall scored five goals in 14 games for Wycombe Wanderers while on loan for three months from Arsenal, but was not signed on. He joined Mansfield on a free transfer in 2005, but was restricted to 19 appearances for the League 2 side and 23 as a substitute. He scored three goals.

Paul Fairclough has said that Birchall, who was "ring rusty" when he joined the Bees, will benefit from leaving Mansfield after not settling there.

After signing his contract with the Bees Birchall told Barnet World: "I have really enjoyed my loan spell and hopefully I can keep learning and keep improving.

"I had a long spell out at Mansfield where I didn't play for a long time. During my loan spell at Barnet I really enjoyed the club atmosphere, the fans support and, of course, scoring goals."
