Club 'misspent cash from lottery'
BBC.co.uk, 18Dec2006

Thousands of pounds of lottery money has been misspent by Mansfield Town Football Club, the BBC has learned.

An audit carried out for Sport England looked at how lottery money awarded solely for the development of youth football had been used.

It found the Centre of Excellence had committed a number of breaches of the funding rules, including the payment of a £255 speeding fine.

Sport England has claimed money back. The club disputed some of the audit.

Cash recovered
The Centre of Excellence received £138,000 of lottery cash during season 2004-05. But more than £23,000 was misspent, the audit discovered.

The Stags used the money on accommodation charges for first-team players, some staffing costs and the speeding fine.

Sport England recovered the cash by withholding part of the following year's grant.

The organisation made a number of recommendations to the club.

Mansfield's chief executive Keith Haslam refused to comment in detail. He said although he disputed some of the audit, all the issues had been resolved.
