Further to the story we ran on 1 July on Stagsnet, St Mirren midfielder Hugh Murray has become the latest trialist at Field Mill. Murray refused a new one year deal with the Scottish side and has elected to try his luck South of the border. Murray played over 150 games for the Saints and has a reputation as a skilfull midfielder.

The former Scotland U21 international turned down a new 12-month deal at Love Street last week. http://www.tribalfootball.com/july/scotnews4010702.html --------- Shuggy Set For Mansfield Story by Stuart Gillespie, http://www.saintmirren-mad.co.uk, 1 July 2002 Hugh Murray is set for a move to English club Mansfield Town. His contract expired today and, as he isn't signing a new one, is free to move. Shuggy was set the deadline of last Thursday to agree terms with the club, and declined them. The reason he gave to the PDE was that the offer was too low for him and he wasn't prepared to go to a wage level equivalent to that of non first team players. This is totally incorrect, as I'll reveal (hopefully) on Wednesday or Thursday. Mansfield play in the English Second Division so it should prove an interesting challenge for Shuggy. -------- Shuggy Leaves Story by Stuart Gillespie, http://www.saintmirren-mad.co.uk, 28 June 2002 After speculation recently, Hugh Murray left St. Mirren today after refusing to sign a new contract. There was, however, a new arrival at Love Street today. Shuggy was offered similar terms to the other players who signed new contracts, however decided these were't good enough for him. He decided instead to go to the Paisley Daily Express and tell them he was being offered a ridiculously small amount, something which is totally untrue. It's a shame to see Shuggy leave, who scored the goal against Stirling Albion in May 1998 which kept the club up, and possibly alive. He'll be missed, but it means a space is on the wage bill for another player. ------------- Murray Talks Begin Story by Stuart Gillespie, http://www.saintmirren-mad.co.uk, 25 June 2002 It has been revealed today that Saints have started talks to keep Hugh Murray at Love Street. Murray's contract expires next week and it is hoped he will resign. The story, which is in The Evening Times, even has a quote from Tom Hendrie, saying "We are already in negotiations and I think Hughie will be signing on with us again." Since when was he called Hughie??? I've heard Shug and Shuggy but Hughie is a new one on me and sounds a little bit dodgy! Anyway, hopefully Shuggy will resign soon, and can provide a good season. He's scored some great goals for us, including the stunner against Stirling Albion which kept us up and kept the club alive. ----------- Name Hugh Murray Date Of Birth 08 January 1979 Place Of Birth Bellshill National Team Scotland Height 5 Ft 10 In Weight 10 St 7 Lb Normal Position Midfielder Team From To Terms / From Fee St Mirren 21 Jan 1997 Signed Career History League FA Cup Lg Cup Other Team AP SB GL AP SB GL AP SB GL AP SB GL St Mirren 134 9 8 7 0 0 8 1 1 2 0 0 Performance Goals Booking Team Results Strike Season Apps Home Away Home Away Wins Losses Draws Rate 2001/2002 34 0 0 3 3 11 14 9 0.00 2000/2001 28 0 1 5 7 19 2 0.04 1999/2000 33 4 1 5 3(1) 19 7 7 0.15 1998/1999 32 0 0 5 1 12 11 9 0.00 1997/1998 31 1 2 5 4 8 16 7 0.10 -------- soccerbase.com: All time playing career Club From To Fee League FA Cup League cup Other St Mirren 21-01-1997 Signed 134 (9) 8 7 (0) 0 8 (1) 1 2 (0) 0 goals / game 0.05 0 0.11 0 Apps Goals Apps Goals Apps Goals Apps Goals -------- http://www.stmirren.com Player Notes : Hugh Murray Signed from: Giffnock North B.C. Hugh Murray is another one of the many yougster at Love Street that have being tagged as having a bright future infront of them. His creative midfield play can create goalscring opportunties and disrupt the opposition's defence. Shug's most important strike came in 1998 when he netted the only goal of the game as Saints won at Stirling to avoid relegation to the Second Division. Like most of the team of season 1999/2000, Hugh played a ket role with his play and also weighed in with some great goals. Season 1999/2000 was topped off when he was also selected in the Scotland U-21 squad, makeing 1 appearence. In the SPL Murray struggled to fulfill expectation's which were not helped with injuries.
