2nd June 2005 13:15

COBBLERS IN RHYS MOVE

Northampton Town are believed to be in talks with Mansfield Town defender Rhys Day.

Cobblers boss Colin Calderwood, who signed former Stags midfielder Lee Williamson last season, is close to securing a deal with a central defender.

Chris Willmott has left Sixfields to sign a two-year contract with Oxford United, while youth-team graduate Luke Graham has been released.

It leaves Northampton with Luke Chambers as their only fit centre-back.

"I think it's pretty obvious we're looking at a central defender," said Calderwood.

"We will bring in some players in other areas but centre-half is where we're looking at just now.

"We've got an idea of who we want to bring in and we've spoken to one or two people already.

"I don't think there will be too much money exchanged, certainly not in our league anyway, and I'm confident we can get the players we want for very little money, or maybe even no money.

"We've got a list of five or six players that we're after and if we end up with four of them I'll be delighted with the group we've got here."

Meanwhile, Stags target Simon Yeo has left Lincoln City in favour of a move to New Zealand Knights, in Australia.
