Mansfield Town defender Scott McNiven, who has been told he will not be given a new contract, says he feels let down.

And midfielder Alex Neil has rejected the Stags' offer because it is less than he is earning now.

McNiven says he was promised a new contract, but has been told his services are no longer required.

He had a spell on the sidelines after being diagnosed with testicular cancer and says he returned to action earlier than he wanted to.

"It's sad because I felt I started the season well. Then I got ill and this looks bad on me with the way it's been handled.

"I was promised a new contract and I came back quicker than I wanted to as a favour to Carlton Palmer. Now I wish I hadn't rushed back.

"I'm still only 26 but I've played 350 games and I'll consider offers."

McNiven has not ruled out the possibility of linking up with Keith Curle at Chester.

"I need a new contract somewhere to pay my bills and I'm annoyed at how Mansfield have gone about this."

Neil says he could be forced to leave Mansfield after rejecting the club's offer.

"I've been offered two-thirds of what I'm on now and I'm disappointed," he said.

"I want to stay, but Mansfield are forcing me to look elsewhere. I am nowhere near being a top earner at the club and I'm not being unreasonable. I am happy here and it has showed in my performances, but I've got a family to look after.

"There are clubs who are interested in me, but I haven't had any contact with Keith Curle or anyone at Chester."
