Rushden & Diamonds Reserves 2 Stags Reserves 3
Lloyd, Heron 2

Tuesday 25 January 2005
Report by John Street

Stags played their first reserve game for months this afternoon down at a cold Rushden where there was a good turn-out from home and travelling Stags fans to see the second string play and the performance was refreshing and successful.

Stags started with a strong line up which included Tommy Curtis back from injury, and gave us an opportunity to view a few of the names who have been embroiled in the post Curle turmoil and thrust into the Stags first team and substitute appearances.

Rushden featured early on a few names including the much travelled Darren Caskey in midfield.

Stags started brightly with Smeltz up front proving to be a nuisance, and two trialists on the right hand side at fullback and winger who looked lively early on, however it was Lloyd who slipped neatly between the Rushden centre halves only to be upended by a third defender to win a foul on the edge of the box who almost gave Stags there first chance.

However the resulting free kick provided nothing and Rushden went down the other end to take the lead.

Stags came back and played some flowing football marshalled by Tommy Curtis and Maxwell was beginning to show some neat touches with Lloyd playing behind Smeltz.

Smeltz went close with a fine header from the trialist winger's cross, before Stags got back on terms when Lloyd wriggled into the box and slid the ball past the keeper for 1-1.

The Stags though could not keep there lead and with Caskey pulling the strings took the lead again before the break 2 - 1.

Good halves from the Stags from Smeltz who worked very hard up front, Maxwell with nice touches, Curtis feeling his way back, and Lloyd's dribbling caused the home side problems

The second half saw both sides metamorphosise into nearly Youth sides
with the Stags retaining only Maxwell and Jason White for the whole second period, with Rushden doing likewise however the Stags had the better of it with Heron scoring with a tap in header with his first
touch, then minutes later with Zaccarius cutting his cross back from the right byline Heron stroked home with his second with his second touch.

The Stags were in control of the game from then on as it finished with a 3 - 2 win, and the Stags management could be well happy on the drive back to Nottingham.
