MANSFIELD Town have failed in their bid to land a new left back in time for tomorrow's New Year's Day clash at Northampton Town (1pm).

Caretaker-manager Carlton Palmer had been given permission by former Stags boss Andy King to speak to one of his defenders at Swindon Town.
The 6ft 3ins left back asked Palmer if he could think about it ovenight, but today turned the move down.

"We will just carry on looking," said Palmer. "Sometimes players at that level just believe they should stay there, even though he is only likely to be a substitite tomorrow.

"If it were me I would rather drop a division to be playing first team football. But I believe everything happens for a reason and the search goes on."

Palmer did not want to name the Swindon player he had been talking to.
