HASLAM HOPEFUL OF CONCLUSION TO CURLE SAGA
14th December 2004 23:45

End in sight to Curle saga?
CHAD website, 14 Dec 04
STAGS chairman Keith Haslam is hopeful a conclusion can be reached to the long-running Keith Curle saga by the end of this week.
The suspended Stags boss was back at Field Mill on Monday for the long awaited disciplinary hearing.
Written findings and statements over allegations made against Curle were presented to the manager and his legal representatives.
Now a final decision rests with chairman Keith Haslam, hopefully before Stags travel to fellow strugglers Shrewsbury Town this Saturday (noon kick-off).
Haslam said: "I can understand supporters' frustration over all the uncertainty but I would just ask them to be patient a little longer.
"They like to be kept informed on what is happening but, in this situation, it is something we cannot say too much about.
"We were due to meet last Friday but Keith's representatives couldn't make it so the meeting was brought forward to Monday.
"We presented all the evidence and both sides asked questions of each other. Now I have to decide if we take the issue further or if no further action is to be taken.
"Everything has to be done properly and minutes of the meeting typed up and posted out for people to digest.
"But I don't see why we can't get this whole thing concluded very quickly now.
"At both ends of the scale, we could be talking about Keith walking back into the building as manager or that it's decided the offence is so severe it is a sacking offence.
"But there are also grades in between. It could be a warning would be issued or we would come to some other arrangement.
"It has taken a lot longer than we would have wanted so please stay patient.
"I thought our supporters were excellent on Saturday. They gave the team a lot of encouragement without any barracking. I hope they can carry on in that mode."
He added: "The last two or three years have been a rollercoaster and now we have been suffering a blip before and during Carlton Palmer coming in.
"It is causing uncertaintly and frustration in supporters which I fully understand.
"But I think the performance on Saturday shows we are trying to get out of it.
"We had 22 efforts on goal against Rushden's one which shows how one-sided it was. In the last four games, the opposition's goalkeeprs have been man of the match which says it all.
"Glenn Hoddle has gone to Wolves, who are also 17th in their table, and pointed out anything is still possible which is true.
"If we can get a couple of back-to-back wins there is no reason why we can't go on a run. Confidence will grow.
"Saturday showed we have the ability in the side but are still lacking some confidence which a goal would have given us.
"I agree we probably had too light a squad which is why we are bolstering it.
"We have brought in a couple of permanent players in Simon Brown - who we have invested in his potential - and Richie Barker - the experienced centre forward this club has been crying out for for 18 months or so.
"We have got three players in on loan as well. Paul Warne is a great character in the dressing room and fitting in well.
"And we are hopeful of getting Jason Talbot and Fraser McLachlan back from injury so we should have a much stronger bench."
A report in a national Sunday newspaper suggested some Stags players have sought PFA advice after allegedly being forced to give witness statements against Curle.
But Mr Haslam said: "I have heard nothing about this from the players and I didn't read the article.
"It is something I will be addressing at but it's not the top of my list at the moment
"I will find out where the gossip is coming from. I have a good idea and it's not from within the club."

Curle awaits Stags verdict

Keith Curle will find out later this week if he is to keep his job as manager of Mansfield after attending a disciplinary hearing at the club on Monday.

Curle was suspended by the Stags on 11 November over allegations he bullied a trainee, leading Carlton Palmer to assume temporary control of first-team affairs at Field Mill.

However, Mansfield have since struggled, picking up two points from 12 in League Two and crashing out of the FA Cup 4-1 to Colchester.

An official spokesman said: "The club presented statements and evidence gathered to Keith and his representatives and he was invited to ask questions of the club.

"The minutes of the meeting were drawn up and given to the chairman to digest and he will inform Keith of his decision later this week.

"He could be completely exonerated, sacked or merely given a warning as to his future conduct."

CURLE SET TO LEAVE STAGS
Evening Post, 14 December 2004
Stags chairman Keith Haslam was today expected to make a decision over Keith Curle's future as manager of Mansfield Town.

Curle was expected to be sacked and caretaker-boss Carlton Palmer given the job full-time.

Haslam is thought to have discussed a severance package with Curle yesterday.

"We had a meeting yesterday but there is no outcome yet," said Haslam.

"We're looking at what was raised at the meeting and I expect something to happen today."

Curle has been suspended since early last month following allegations of bullying.
