STAGSNET`S STATISTICAL PREVIEW
22nd November 2004 21:44

After drawing 1-1 at Field Mill on November 13, Halford giving Colchester the lead on 25 minutes and Alex John-Baptiste equalizing through a cracker three minutes later, the Stags now face a tough replay at Layer Road on Tuesday. The winner will face Rushden & Diamonds away in the FA Cup 2nd round on December 4.

The FA Cup 1st round game on the above-mentioned November Saturday was the first-ever cup tie between the two well-known giant-killers although the clubs have faced each other in league fixtures for 23 seasons, starting in 1958-59, when both sides were founder members of the old third division, for the time being ending in 2002-03 when the Stags won the home tie 4-2 on November 1, 2002, thanks to the Iyseden Christie show, banging in all the Stags goals that Friday night, and unluckily losing 0-1 at Layer Road in the final minutes on February 14, 2003 ā€“ a few moments before McGleish's winner for Colchester, Adam Eaton hit the woodwork.

Earlier this season, Colchester showed their giant-killing credentials (first shown in the late fourties when then First Division Huddersfield were kayoed at Layer Road as a non-league side) by disposing of Premership side West Bromwich after extra time to a 2-1 scoreline in the League Cup (thus gaining revenge for a 1968 FA Cup Third round replay 0-4 crash at The Hawthorns after the sides had been dead-locked 1-1 at Colchester), then making Southampton work very hard to go through to a 3-2 win.

Last term, both sides enjoyed long FA Cup runs. While the Stags reached the third round succumbing 0-2 at home to First Division Burnley, Colchester progressed even further. The fifth round and a 0-1-defeat away at Sheffield United after kayoeing Coventry in a fourth round replay was the FA Cup terminus for the ā€œUā€.

For the record, the clubs' longest FA Cup runs:

Stags in 1968-69: 1st round Tow Law 4-1 (home, scorers Ledger (2), Keeley, Sharkey); 2nd round Rotherham 2-2 (away, scorers Keeley, Sharkey), 2nd round replay Rotherham 1-0 (home, scorer: Ledger), 3rd round Sheffield United 2-1 (home, scorer Roberts D (2)), 4th round Southend 2-1 (home, scorers Sharkey, Roberts D), 5th round West Ham 3-0 (home, scorers Keeley, Roberts D, Sharkey), QF Leicester 0-1 (home).
