Malta coach Horst Heese has included Stags defender Luke Dimech in his inexperienced 18-man squad for Saturday's World Cup qualifying match against Euro 2004 quarter-finalists Sweden.
Heese, who returned for a second spell in charge last year, has jettisoned several members of the old guard in favour of younger players.
Former Malta skipper David Carabott has been one of the most notable casualties of Heese's policy which led the 36-year-old full-back, capped a record 121 times by his country, to announce his international retirement last May.
However, Dimech has been called up, despite his recent lack of match action and his decision not to play for his country in the Malta International Football Tournament at the Ta'Qali Stadium, also featuring Estonia, Moldova and Belarus, in February, when he said he wanted to concentrate on keeping his first team place at Field Mill.
