FIRST NEW SIGNING COMES IN
23rd April 2002 16:08

SADDLERS defender, Dion Scott will this afternoon complete a move to second
division new boys, Mansfield Town.

The 21-year-old has come up through the ranks at Bescot Stadium and is a
former youth team skipper. He has been a regular in the reserve team over
the past few seasons, but has been unable to make the break-through into
the first-team and was loaned out to Nationwide Conference outfit, Boston
United earlier in the season. "I have looked at the situation in the centre
back position and there is simply no room for him," admitted boss, Colin
Lee. "It is a decision that has had to be made and hopefully he will go on
to gain regular first-team football at Mansfield, something that I could
not offer him here.

"He has done nothing particularly wrong, but ideally I would like to add
more experience to the heart of the back-line. It looks as though Ian Roper
will sign a new deal by the end of the week and on top of that I also have
Matt Carbon, Tony Barras and Matt Gadsby to call upon, but we need to
introduce players who are proven at this level."

Scott links up with former Walsall defender, Stuart Watkiss, who is now in
charge at Field Mill.

The former youth team skipper has worked his way up through the ranks and is now knocking on the first-team door. A talented and mobile defender who is comfortable on the ball and calm under pressure, he impressed at reserve team level last year and should be ready to make the transition to the first-team without too many problems when the time is right.
