Mansfield Town player-boss Keith Curle has played down rumours linking Ben Doane with a return to Field Mill.

The 23-year-old was released by Sheffield United at the end of last season and although Curle admits he has asked Doane to train with the Stags he has not offered him a contract.

"Ben is still recovering from the broken ankle that he picked up when he was recalled to Sheffield last season and he phoned and asked if he could come and see the lads play," Curle told the club's official website.

"I like the lad and think that he can do a job, so I asked him if he would like to come and train with us to aid his rehabilitation into the game.

"Of course I would like to be able to offer Ben a contract but this hasn't been discussed.

"I would like to think that if he joins us for training, even if he doesn't stay in Mansfield he will look back fondly at us for helping him get back to fitness."

Doane played 11 games while on loan with Mansfield last season.
