Mansfield Town had a useful friendly at Worksop Town this afternoon, creating a glut of chances and finally scoring three times in the second half. The Stags created 16 chances in the first half alone without finding the net in a catalogue of near misses, great saves, and one thunderous effort against the bar. It was an absolute onslaught. In the second half, the Stags went ahead with a header from Lee Collins from a Kevan Hurst fine corner. Collins has yet to score for the Stags in a competitive game, hopefully this will be the start of something. The Stags made it 2-0 when Rhys Bennett did well on the byline on the right, and pulled back for Chris Clements who fired into the bottom corner of the net. Surprisingly Worksop pulled a goal back when a ball across the area wasn’t dealt with. Mansfield scored a third, when young Zayn Hakeem scored from close range from another fine Kevan Hurst corner. Plenty of positives for the Stags with just 7 days until the league season gets underway. Standing out today were Kevan Hurst with some excellent delivery on crosses, including corners, and a fine shot against the bar, and Rhys Bennett with some excellent play pushing forward. It was pleasing to see Mal Benning back in the action after missing some games as a precaution through slight injury, and it looked like he hadn’t been away. Chris Clements showed plenty of nice touches, and a good finish for his goal, along with a determination to win the ball. The defence was barely tested so it was hard to judge the new loan signing at centre half Kyle Howkins, though he certainly looks a big unit, but he did show some nimble footwork. I would guess that at least 9 of the starting 11 at Worksop will start at Newport on Saturday. After a month of pre-season friendlies, I think we’re ready for the season to start now. Bring it on! Come on Mansfield.

I think it’s always difficult to judge how a season will go from pre-season. Last season the team were in and around the play-offs for the first three-quarters of the season but then fell away because they weren’t quite strong enough. Adam Murray has done a good job in the summer tweaking the squad to make it a bit better, and I think that a top half finish, pushing for the play-offs, is a realistic hope.

DETAILED REPORT:
Mansfield are at Sandy Lane this afternoon to play Worksop Town, the world’s 4th oldest football club, founded in 1861. Worksop currently play at step 5, in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, 5 leagues below League Two. This ground was built in 1992, although Worksop are now tenants here. Worksop Town previously played at Central Avenue, less than a mile from here, for 90 years, and where I also saw Nottinghamshire Cricket play on many occasions.

Stags team (4-1-3-2, Chapman in front of the back four):
Scott Shearer;
Rhys Bennett, Lee Collins, George Taft, Mal Benning;
Adam Chapman;
Mitch Rose, Chris Clements, Kevan Hurst;
Danny Rose, Matt Green.

Good to see Benning back in the team after his slight injury which kept him out in what Adam Murray said was a precaution only.

Subs from: Jensen, Howkins, McGuire, Hemmings, Hamilton, Baxendale, Hakeem, Hoban, Trialist (Conrad Balatoni).
Pearce is here, but appears to have an injury. Jack Thomas remains out injured. No Adi Yussuf.

Kyle Howkins the new loan signing from West Brom yesterday is here and might come on as sub. Howkins has signed until January 3rd (with no recall option for West Brom). A reminder that half season long loans and full season long loans are still permitted during the transfer window, but short term loans are no longer allowed.

Mansfield are playing in the new away kit for the first time.

Worksop include former Stags youngsters Jack Hawkins and Adam Somes. Chris Waddle’s son Jack Waddle is playing and Chris Waddle is here to watch him play.

3 Benning one-two with Clements and fired over from 30 yards, right footed.
4 Adam Scott got past Collins and his cross was put behind for a corner.
6 Great ball Taft out to Bennett on right, Rose crossed into the Green, who turned and fired wide of right post from the left. Good effort.
8 Good chipped ball in from Bennett, Danny Rose rose well but headed over the angle.
10 An unusual formation from a corner for the Stags, but the corner comes to nothing.
11 Good turn by Green 25 yards out, and he fired wide of the left post.
13 Bennett curled in a lovely cross left footed from the right. Green tried to head goalwards and a defender headed over his own bar, though the ref gave a goal-kick.
16 Benning got to byline and dinked a cross to the far post where Mitch Rose headed goalwards and it was blocked.
22 Benning tried his luck again from 25 yards, low and straight to the keeper.
24 Adam Scott made good run into the Stags area before he was well-tackled by Mitch Rose.
25 Hurst cut inside from the left onto his right foot and fired a piledriver from 18 yards towards the roof of the net but the keeper saved above his head.
32 Benning floated a cross into the box, Danny Rose knocked down to Clements, who chested down and sliced over the bar from 25 yards.
36 Adam Scott sent a 35 yard free kick well over the bar for Worksop.
37 Great cross from Benning from the left, Green rose well and hung in the air long enough to get in a header, which was inches wide of the left post.
38 Good shot from Mitch Rose on the volley, heading for roof of net before a brilliant save to tip it over the bar.
39 Hurst’s ball in from the right, keeper fumbled, but somehow ended up going just wide.
39 Then following the resulting corner, Benning crossed from the left and Bennett headed over. Bennett put his head in his hands.
41 Taft great ball down the left for Benning. Stags swept the ball to the right, Mitch Rose put in a good cross which was headed behind for a corner.
42 Brilliant from Hurst on the left, cut inside, and smashed a great shot against the bar from 16 yards.
43 Free kick from 22 yards. Clements took it towards the bottom left corner, and the keeper tipped wide with another great save.
44 Hurst crossed from the left, Bennett headed down, keeper claimed.

Half time and it’s been an absolute onslaught from Mansfield on the Worksop goal, but no goals to show for it at half time. A catalogue of near misses, great saves, and one thunderous effort against the bar. 16 chances for the Stags I make it.

Half time 0-0

47 mins GOAL 0-1 Hurst curled a corner in from the left, and Collins headed in from close range. Collins has not yet scored a competitive first team goal for the Stags.

66 Great play by Clements on the right to win the ball highlights his determination.
68 Stags free kick from the corner of the area on the left. Green took the free kick (unusual in itself) and hammered it into the wall.
70 Good effort for Worksop as Mark Fereday shoots across Shearer who tips wide for a corner.
71 SUBS Hakeem for Green, McGuire for Clements.
71 GOAL 1-2 Goal out the blue for Worksop as a ball across the area from the left is not dealt with and Mitch Husbands hammers into the roof of the net from 6 yards.
75 SUB Kyle Howkins for Taft. The new loan signing into the action.
76 Hurst angled ball forward and Hoban attacks it with a header wide of the right post from 16 yards.
77 Hurst is fouled on the edge of the area, ref plays on, Bennett fires wide across the face of goal from the right.
79 SUB Hemmings for Benning. Hemmings left wing back, Bennett right wing back, McGuire, Howkins, and trialist at centre half.
85 Howkins shows some nimble footwork. He’s a big unit.
86 The first yellow card of pre-season to Worksop’s no.18. Chapman takes the free kick quickly from inside his own half and the keeper tips it onto the underside of the bar! But the ref hasn’t restarted play.
87 GOAL 1-3 From Hurst’s corner from the left, Zayn Hakeem scores from close range at the near post, on the volley from about a yard out.
89 Pat Hoban makes room for himself 20 yards from goal and fires wide of the left post.
90 Great play by Hemmings on the left and his cross is just held by keeper at full stretch.

Full time 1-3
