Martin Shaw at the One Call Stadium, Field Mill

Mansfield Town played Premier League new boys Hull City at the One Call Stadium this evening. It had been a sweltering day and it was still extremely hot this evening. Hull put out their first team including numerous multi-million pound players and their quality was there for all to see. For the Stags, Adam Murray had set the game up to see how his side would cope against a side that would keep the ball and have that extra quality all over the park. For the large part Mansfield did well and can take a lot from the game. Hull won the game 1-0 and the only goal came on 55 minutes when substitute Jarrod Bowen fired left footed into the top corner from a good ball forward from Shaun Maloney. It would have been more than 1-0 but for three terrific saves from Brian Jensen all of which followed high quality moves from Hull opening the Stags up. Former Stag Sam Clucas played the full 90 minutes for Hull in a central midfield role and was excellent. Mo Diame, who scored Hull’s fabulous winner in the play-off final in May, was also excellent and oozed quality. In the second half, Hull brought on £10 million striker Abel Hernandez to test the Stags even further.

For Mansfield there were plenty of promising performances. Brian Jensen made three terrific saves. The Stags centre halves did well with Krystian Pearce again looking solid, as was Lee Collins who played well, and in the second half George Taft looked comfortable on the ball. Full back Rhys Bennett tried to push forward when he could but will get more opportunity against lesser opposition. In midfield, it was difficult to judge Hurst, Mitch Rose, Hamilton, and in the second half Clements, Hemmings, because Hull inevitably had so much of the ball. Pat Hoban again impressed up front, and showed great strength holding the ball up with his back to goal. I’m confident he’s going to be an important player for us this season and the type of player we’ve not had recently other than Chris Beardsley who was unfortunately always injured. Jamie McGuire was a late substitute, typically making two good blocks and a good tackle. The Stags had two trialists this evening. A trialist left back played the entire 90 minutes and impressed. He was solid and got forward when he could. He could be a useful acquisition if Adam Murray is allowed to add an extra body to the squad. A trialist striker played the last 35 minutes. He wasn’t impressive - don’t expect to see him back!

Stags starting XI (4-1-3-2, Chapman in front of the back four and dropping into the defence when full backs push forward):
Brian Jensen;
Rhys Bennett, Krystian Pearce, Lee Collins, TRIALIST LEFT BACK (Charles Dunne);
Adam Chapman;
Mitch Rose, Kevan Hurst, CJ Hamilton;
James Baxendale, Pat Hoban.

Stags team starting 2nd half (4-1-3-2, Collins in front of the back four):
Brian Jensen;
Mitch Rose, Krystian Pearce, George Taft, TRIALIST LEFT BACK (Charles Dunne);
Lee Collins;
Kevan Hurst, Chris Clements, Ashley Hemmings;
Matt Green, Pat Hoban.

Second half subs:
SUB: 53 mins. TRIALIST STRIKER for Hoban.
SUB: 59 mins. Cameron Healey for Collins (in front of back four) (Healey is a youth teamer who Murray told me at Rainworth has been training with the first team; he played at Rainworth and Clipstone).
SUB: 66 mins. Corbin Shires for Pearce
SUB: 67 mins. Jamie McGuire for Hurst
SUB: 71 mins. Teddy Bloor for Mitch Rose (Bloor is a youth teamer)

Subs not used: Adi Yussuf (to allow trialist striker to get game time and show what he could do), Louis Danquah.

Not involved in the squad for the game: Jack Thomas and Mal Benning. Both just as a precaution as far as I understand.

There was considerable media interest at Field Mill with Hull manager Steve Bruce having been interviewed for the England manager’s job 24 hours earlier. Sky Sports, BBC Sport and ITV were all present.

On 5 minutes a good touch from Hoban. Hull won a free kick on 6 minutes inside the D, for a foul by Pearce on Mo Diami. Shaun Maloney took it and it was deflected off the wall, which did its job, and just over the bar. Hull were keeping much of the ball, but on 12 minutes a good passage from the Stags also keeping the ball.

On 14 minutes, Hoban burst forward and got in a shot from 20 yards which was blocked.

A good move from the Stags on 16 minutes. Trialist left back received the ball on the left, found Hamilton, who squared to Hoban, and turned and shot low at the keeper Kuciak.

Moments later, Mitch Rose tried a shot from 30 yards. It looked to be going wide but took a deflection for a corner. From the corner on the left by Chapman, the Stags won another corner on the right. A good corner in from the right by Hurst, and Pearce headed over the bar.

Hull were having the majority of possession, as you’d expect. On 24 minutes, Tom Huddlestone shot from 28 yards, Chapman deflected it wide of the right post.

A good attack from the Stags on 26 minutes. Hoban headed to Hamilton on the left, he played back inside to Hoban, Hoban got the ball onto his left foot and sent a very good shot just past the right post.

Absolute class from Mo Diame on 35 minutes, he sold Bennett and Mitch Rose a dummy leaving them on their backsides, cut onto his right foot, and curled a shot just wide of the right post with Jensen motionless.

A nervous moment for Jensen on 38 minutes, as Bowen shot from 22 yards, Jensen fumbled and just stopped it going over the line behind him.

More good skill from the impressive youngster Bowen on 40 minutes and Collins brought him down 25 yards from goal. That would have been a yellow for Collins in a league game. Robert Snodgrass took the free kick but sent it high and wide.

On 41 minutes, Kevan Hurst teed up a volley for himself from the left which he sent wide of the right post.

Jensen made a terrific save on 44 minutes. A wonderful incisive move from Hull, Snodgrass slid a ball in for Shaun Maloney inside the box leaving him with a one-on-one with Jensen, and Jensen blocked his shot.

Jensen made another great save on 45+1 minutes. Snodgrass shot from 12 yards with his left foot and Jensen made a great save to his right.

Straight to the other end. Baxendale broke to the edge of the box, squared to Hoban, who miscued a shot straight at the keeper. Hoban kicked the turf in frustration.

A pleasing first half for Mansfield. Hull showed their class especially towards the end of the half and Jensen twice kept them out.

Half time 0-0

Four substitutions for the Stags at the break and five more during the rest of the second half (details above).

On 53 minutes, Matt Green won a free kick for Mansfield. Clements took it into the middle and the trialist striker, just on as sub nearly got onto the end of it.

Hull took the lead on 55 minutes. Shaun Maloney slipped a good ball forward to send Jarrod Bowen clear and he fired left footed into the top left corner of the net giving Jensen no chance.

On 58 minutes, a shot from the impressive Clucas deflected wide of the left post.

Hull brought on 35 year told trialist Peter Odemwingie on 63 minutes.

Good defending by trialist left back on 65 minutes with a tackle on Bowen.

On 69 minutes, McGuire did well to block a Snodgrass shot, that may have been going wide anyway.

On 73 minutes, Ashley Hemmings fired wide of the left post. Two minutes later, McGuire blocked another shot from Snodgrass, and then dispossessed Odemwingie as he headed towards goal.

Chris Clements did a Cruyff-turn to get away from £10 million man Abel Hernandez.

Another wonderful save from Jensen on 78 minutes. A good move from Hull, to sub Greg Olley in the area, he shot and Jensen tipped it onto and over the bar.

On 83 minutes, a let-off for Mansfield. Odemwingie hit the inside of the post, it rebounded to Greg Luer whose shot was well blocked on the line by Taft. Good defending from the new centre half.

Full time and 1-0 to Hull but plenty of promising performances from the Stags.

Man of the match: Brian Jensen
